William8 Whitney (William7, William6, William5, William4, Nathaniel3, John2, John1), son of William7 and Anna (Heywood) Whitney, was born 17 Sep 1791, Gardner, MA,[1] and died 23 Aug 1839, Templeton, MA.[2]

He married firstly, 10 May 1814, Gardner, MA, Sybil Clark Greenwood,[3] daughter of Jonathan and Sibyl (Holbrook) Greenwood. She was born 7 Nov 1792, baptized 30 Dec 1792, Gardner, MA. and died 1 Dec 1817, Templeton, MA, aged 25 years.[4]

He married secondly, 10 Feb 1819, Templeton, MA, Dulcena Turner,[5] daughter of Asa and Nabby (Baldwin) Turner. She was born 11 Feb 1795, Templeton, MA, and died 10 May 1884, Winchendon, MA, aged 89 years 2 months 28 days, of tabis mesenterica.[6]

William Whitney was born in Gardner, MA, and resided with his parents on their farm until his marriage, when he went to Templeton to reside. He conducted a large farm and kept a country tavern. It was a well known resort and farmers enroute to Boston with produce made his hotel their place for spending the night. There were no railroads then nearer than Boston. The farmers from the Green Mountain State came with loads of hogs, corn and maple sugar and droves of cattle, sheep and turkeys. In those early days the hotel keeper in the town was one of the most important personages. Mr. Whitney was a genial man, always kind to the poor, frequently giving loads of wood, hay and provisions to the needy. He was a Unitarian in religious belief, a kind man in his family and much respected and beloved by all. The house in which he resided is still standing and is a lovely summer home. A large pine grove near by, and the land broken by hills and valleys, adds greatly to the scenery. He resided Gardner and Templeton, MA.
