Family:Whitney, Simeon (1802-1870)

Simeon7 Whitney (Daniel Hobbs6, Joshua5, Joshua4, Joshua3, Benjamin2, John1), son of Daniel Hobbs6 and Irene (Morse) Whitney, was born 22 Jan 1802 (twin), Medway, MA, and died 6 Dec 1870, Boston, MA, aged 69 years 10 months 16 days, of phthisis, laborer, married.[1]

He married, 16 Jan 1825, Dover, MA, Eliza Newell, daughter of Nathan and Dorcas (-----) Newell.[2] She was born about 10 Mar 1804, Needham, MA, and died 25 Aug 1877, Sterling, MA, aged 73 years 5 months 15 days, of disease of the heart, widowed.[3]

i. Mary E.8 Whitney, b. ca. 1828; d. 4 Oct 1898, Newton, MA; m. 17 Jun or 5 May 1847, Needham, MA, Francis Jones, both of Needham, b. ca. 1823, son of Lewis and Martha (-----) Jones;[4] res. Newton, MA.
ii. Louisa Whitney, b. ca. 1831; d. 25 Apr 1836, Natick, MA, aged 4 years.[5]
iii. Ellen L. Whitney, b. ca. 1837; "of Needham" m. 1 Jul 1855, Dover, MA, Orrin Beard of Newton.[6]
iv. Emma Frances Whitney, b. Mar 1844, Dover, MA;[7] d. 20 Mar 1884, Sterling, MA, aged 40 years, of phthisis;[8] m.(1) bef. 1870, [?Henry/Edward/Simeon F.?] Whitney, b. ca. 1842, MA, d. aft. 1870; of Sterling, m.(2) 27 Sep 1874, Clinton, MA, or Sterling, MA, Samuel H. Seaver, b. ca. 1825, Brattleboro, VT, son of Joseph and Persis (Howe) Seaver.[9]

Notes

No couple Nathan and Dorcas (-----) Newell who would fit the above data has been found.

The following confusing records may apply to his daughter Emma Frances Whitney:

  • Children: Albert A. and Alice A. Whitney, twins, born 5 Feb 1868, Dorchester, MA, parents Simeon F. and Emma F. (Whitney), born Needham and Dover, respectively.[10] This says that Emma was married to Simeon F. Whitney, who cannot be found in any other records. Notice that Simeon was her father's given name.
  • 1870, Boston Ward 13, Suffolk Co., MA:

This implies that Emma's husband was a certain Henry Whitney, who cannot be found in any other record.

This implies a marriage for Emma for which no record has been found. If so, then Emma must have divorced Samuel Seaver. She cannot be found in 1880 under the surname Seaver. Her death record in 1884 calls her Emma Seaver, however, not Emma Aldrich.

  • 1880, Leominster, Worcester Co., MA: Samuel Seaver, 54, married, b. VT, farm hand, boarder in the family of Persis H. Buss and her son Elliott Jones.
  • Brunell Family Tree, a public tree at Ancestry.com. This says that the above 1880 census records pertain to an Emma Frances Aldrich, born 22 Sep 1845, Attleborough, MA, daughter of Silas Edwin and Siloma Niles (Foster) Aldrich. This seems unlikely, given the other records above. It does reveal that Joseph William Aldrich and his wife Emma had another daughter, Rosella Francis Aldrich, born 12 Aug 1880, Sterling, MA, and died 28 Jan 1970, East Haven, CT, who married about 1897, William Henry Kent.
  • Son Albert A. Whitney married, 15 Dec 1891, Leominster, MA, Mary S. Grimshaw, b. ca. 1882, Sterling, MA, daughter of Edward and Abbie (-----) Grimshaw.[11] In the marriage record, his parents are given as Edward and Emma F. (Newell) Whitney. Notice that Newell was Emma's mother's maiden name. They had a son Albert Whitney, b. 26 Feb 1893, Worcester, MA.[12]

  • Daughter Alice A. Whitney has not been found after the 1880 census.

So, was her Whitney husband named Simeon F., Henry, or Edward? Or were the twins illegitimate, paternity unknown, and these records attempts to suppress that information?
