Dea. Nathaniel Gerry8 Whitney (Joseph7, Nathaniel6, Nathaniel5, Nathaniel4, Nathaniel3, John2, John1), son of Joseph7 and Polly (Stockwell) Whitney, was born 4 Jul 1810, Grafton, MA,[1] and died 2 Dec 1887, Worceester, MA.[2]

He married firstly, 24 Dec 1833, Grafton, MA, Charlotte Thompson,[3] daughter of Elisha and Matilda (Richardson) Thompson. She was born 27 Oct 1810, Brookfield, MA, and died 24 Mar 1855, Newton, MA, aged 41 years, in child bed.[4]

He married secondly, 28 Aug 1855, Newton, MA, Anna Barnard (Peck) Hunt, daughter of Aaron and Mary (Barnard) Peck.[5] She was born Dec 1814, Providence, RI, and died 17 Apr 1898, Worcester, MA, aged 83 years 4 months 3 days, of bronchitis and old age.[6] She had married firstly, 3 May 1852, John B. Hunt.

He was made a deacon of the Grafton Baptist church 10 Feb 1859; was a farmer. He died in Worcester, and was buried in Grafton; resided Grafton and Worcester, MA.

iii. Charlotte Maria Whitney, b. 19 Oct 1843, Grafton, MA;[9] d. 28 Feb 1846, Grafton, MA, aged 2 years 4 months 9 days, of scarlet fever.[10]
iv. Harriett Maria Whitney, b. 9 Feb 1848, Grafton, MA;[11] d. 23 Aug 1848, Grafton, MA, aged 6 months, of disease of brain.[12]
v. Chandler Pratt Whitney, b. 15 Mar 1850, Newton, MA;[13] m. Imogene Osborn.
vi. Charlotte Matilda Whitney, b. 7 Mar 1855; d. 1930; "Lottie M." m. 9 Oct 1873, Worcester, James Madison Dunton, b. 21 Nov 1852, Holden, MA, son of Ezra H. and Lucy (-----) Dunton;[14] resided 28 Hawley St., Worcester. Children:
a. Grace Louise Dunton, b. 2 Jul 1877.

Notes

Charlotte's marriage record calls her father "George N." Whitney.

Deacon Nathaniel Gerry Whitney, born 4 July 1810 in Grafton, Massachusetts, died 2 Dec 1887 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Buried in North Grafton [obituary].

Married first, by Rev. Ottis Converse, Charlotte Thompson, 24 Dec 1833. She died in Grafton 24 Dec 1855. Born about 1812.

Married second, by Rev. John Jennings, in Newton Centre, Massachusetts, 28 Aug 1855, Mrs. Anna Bernard Hunt.

I have newspaper clipping of death notice of Deacon Nathaniel Whitney, also a copy of a letter he wrote to his brother dated Feb. 6, 1858, also copies of deguerrotypes of Mrs. Anna Bernard Hunt and Charlotte Thompson, and Chandler Pratt Whitney (age 5).

1. Luther Warren Whitney born 2 Oct 1834 in Grafton Massachusetts. Death date unknown. Married Ruth E. Tefft, Civil War veteran, Company D, 22nd Regiment Infantry. Massachusetts [pension record Civil War].

2. George Thompson Whitney, Civil War veteran, born 11 Oct 1838 at Northbridge, Mass. Died aged 88. Married Mary E. Putman. [Civil War pension record, obituary] In 1879 became chief engineer at Worcester County House of Correction, post held for 26 years until retirement in 1915 [newspaper cutting about retirement and obituary].

3. Charlotte Maria Whitney, born in Grafton, 19 Oct 1843, died Feb 1844, aged 2 years 4 months and 9 days, scarlet fever.

4. Harriet Maria Whitney, born 9 Feb 1848 in Grafton, Massachusetts, died 23 Aug 1848 aged 6 months 14 days, disease of the brain.

5. Chandler Pratt Whitney, born 18 Mar 1850 at Newton Center, Massachusetts. Died in ----- on Monday Jan 24, year unknown. (possibilities 1910, 1916 and 1921. Married 18 Mar 1872 in Worcester, Massachusetts, Imogene August Osborn, daughter of John Osborn and Mary Elizabeth Newcomb [Marriage Certificate]. Separated. Obituary stuck in family bible -- Whitney, In this city, Jan 24, Chandler P. Whitney. Funeral service from the warerooms of E. A. Murray and son, 1514 Washington St. Wednesday Jan 26 at 2 p.m. Friends invited to be present.

6. Charlotte Matilda Whitney, born 7 Mar 1855 in Grafton, Massachusetts. Died 1930. Married James Madison Dunton, 9 Oct 1873.
