Jonathan7 Whitney (Jonathan6, Caleb5, Jonathan4, Richard3, Richard2, John1), son of Jonathan6 and Lucy (Wheeler) Whitney, was born 23 Jul 1802, Sterling, MA,[1] and died 22 Jul 1883, East Templeton, MA, aged 82 years, of cholera morbus, chair maker.[2]

He married firstly, 23 Jan 1823, Ashby, MA, Lucy Spaulding.[3] She was born 1799, Ashby, MA, and died 19 Aug 1833, Templeton, MA, aged 32 years.[4]

He married secondly, 28 May 1843, Templeton, MA, Lorena French,[5] daughter of Fisher and Hannah (-----) French. She died 26 Jun 1883, Templeton, MA, aged 73 years 6 months 16 days, of typhoid fever and peritonitis.[6]

The death of Jonathan Whitney, which occurred at his home in East Templeton, MA, on the 22d ult., removed one of the pioneers of the chair manufacturing industry in Worcester county. During nearly the whole of his long life of eighty-one years, he has been engaged in manufacturing chairs in whole or in part. When a young man he manufactured, in a small way, wood seat chairs, and has witnessed and participated in the growth of the business till it has reached its present colossal proportions. Now nearly all parts of a chair are made by machinery, but in Mr. Whitney's young days it was done almost entirely by hand. For a number of years past Mr. Whitney has been working on contracts with Messrs. Heywood Bros, & County, of Gardner, for seating chairs. He was a strictly honest man, and intended to deal justly by all with whom he came in contact. Very benevolent, no good or worthy enterprise ever suffered at his hands, and he was always willing to help those who needed assistance. He was greatly esteemed. He resided Sterling and East Templeton, MA.
