Edward Whitney

Edward8 Whitney (John7, John6, Nathan5, David4, Benjamin3, John2, John1), son of John7 and Lydia (Allen) Whitney, was born 12 Aug 1834, Westminster, MA,[1] and died 5 Feb 1897, Worcester, MA, aged 62 years 5 months 24 days, of chronic interstitial nephritis and uraemia.[2]

He married firstly, 26 Nov 1857, or 27 Oct 1857, Worcester, MA, Susan Louise Cutting, daughter of Nathan Howard and Mary Reed7 (Whitney) Cutting,[3] and granddaughter of Nathan6 and Eunice (Puffer) Whitney.[4] She was born 29 Aug 1838, and died 1 Jan 1880, Worcester, MA, aged 41 years of meningitis.[5]

He married secondly, 27 Oct 1886, Worcester, MA, Emma Louisa Rice, daughter of William and Emeline (-----) Rice. She was born about 1849, Grafton, MA.[6]

Edward Whitney was born in Westminster, and, like his brother, George C., became a resident of Worcester. In early life he was, for four years, clerk in the Metropolitan bank in New York City. He is engaged in the wholesale stationery business in that city, and has been since 1858; is a prominent worker in all Y. M. C. A. and Sunday-school matters. He never held any public office, or cared for it. For some years he has been president of the Y. M. C. A. and of the Worcester County Congregational Club; resided Crown St., Worcester, MA.

Heywood says the following:[7]

"Edward Whitney8 (133) left his native place at the age of 18 and spent 4 years in the city of New York. He then located in Worc. where he has since res., actively and successfully engaged in business. Interested in whatever is conducive to human welfare, he has done much to promote the better life of the city, and to lift the world to a higher level. For 2 yrs. he was President of the Worc. Y.M.C.A., for several yrs. chairman of the Ex. Com. of the Mass. Y.M.C.A., and for 2 yrs. Pres. of the Worc. Co. Congregational Club. In these and in many other ways has he illustrated a noble type of Christian character."
