Charles Edward Hill Whitney, son of Josiah and Maria (Gerrish) Hill, foster son of William G. and Esther (Chase) Whitney, was born about 1849, Troy, ME, and died Apr 1908, Lost at sea aboard the Schooner J. H. Chaffee.

He married 19 Oct 1883, Bangor, ME, Elizabeth E. "Nellie" Gilpatrick. She was born about 1859, Clifton, ME, and died 6 Feb 1926, Chelsea, MA.

Charles was not born into this family. He was informally adopted into the family when he was orphaned. He resumed his birth name after his service in the Civil War, in which he served as Charles E. Whitney. He was a steward aboard the Schooner J. H. Chaffee when it was lost at sea after departing on 9 Apr 1908 from Boston for Perth Amboy, NJ.
