Family:Whitney, Alfred Augustus (1842-1915)

Alfred Augustus Whitney (Moses), son of Moses and Harriet M. (-----) Whitney), was born Nov 1842, Barre, MA, and died 1915. He was buried in Westfield Cemetery, Danielson, CT.[1]

He married firstly, 26 Oct 1861, Blackstone, MA, Emma/Emily/Emeline Augusta Young, daughter of Wellington and Phebe (Buffum) Young.[2] She was born 5 Sep 1842, Douglas, MA, or Cumberland, RI, and died 8 May 1920, Worcester, MA, aged 77 years, of intestinal obstruction.[3] Apparently they were divorced. She was buried in East Douglas, MA.

He married secondly, 1 Apr 1884, Woonsocket, RI, Abby Susan (Paine) Whitney, daughter of Lemuel Nelson and Phebe Susan (Davis) Paine.[4] She was born about 1849, Burrillville, RI. She had married firstly, Henry A.8 Whitney, q.v. Apparently they were divorced. She married thirdly, 12 Dec 1900, Braintree, MA, or Providence, RI, Garrett Gerald Cullinan.

He married thirdly, 18 Apr 1888, Woonsocket, RI, Helena Langille, daughter of Joseph and Mary Waugh (Kennedy) Langille.[5] She was born 22 Jul 1862, Central New Annan, NS, and died 20 May 1949. She was buried in Westfield Cemetery, Danielson, CT.[6]

In the Civil War he served in Company F, 4th Massachusetts Heavy Artillery. He was a member of the G.A.R.

Children of Alfred Augustus and Emma/Emily Augusta (Young) Whitney:

i. Alfred Edward Whitney, b. 14 Jun 1863, Uxbridge, MA,[7] or 16 Aug 1863, Mendon, MA;[8] m. Martha Washington Brooks.
ii. Carrie Estelle, b. 1865, Blackstone, MA; not in family in 1870; d. aft. 1880, then unmarried.
iii. Herschel Whitney, b. ca. 1869; d. 8 Mar 1896, Worcester, MA, aged 27 years 2 months, of typhoid fever;[9] m. 28 Oct 1893, Worcester, MA, Mary B. Lavene, b. ca. 1872, Worcester, MA, dau. of John B. and Mary E. (Oliver) Lavene.[10]

Notes

Alfred and Abbie were reported as married in the 1880 census, even though the marriage record is dated four years later, in 1884. Perhaps they were actually married in 1874, instead.

This was Francis Judson Stockwell and his wife Harriet Matilda (Clark) Stockwell. She was not Harriet, mother of Alfred.
