Jonathan Whitney is not found in the 1855 Massachusetts state census. His wife and daughter are located in Acton as paupers. He reappears in 1859 marrying Mary (Reed) Piper. He then appears to use the name Joseph, thereafter. That Jonathan and Joseph may be two separate sons of John D. and Elizabeth Doughty Whitney is not supported by the 1840 federal census which lists 2 sons ages 10-14. These 2 sons would most likely have been John and Jonathan. A marriage record is also found on 20 Mar 1876 of Joseph Whitney and Mary Piper marrying in Westford.[24] The records states that this is also a second marriage for both.
