Joseph5 Whitney (Benjamin4, Joseph3, John2, John1), son of Benjamin4 and Elizabeth (Fiske) Whitney, was born 3 Dec 1710, Watertown, MA,[1] and died before 22 Nov 1784, Watertown, MA.[2]
He married firstly, 19 Apr 1737, Watertown, MA, Mary Child "both of Watertown",[3] daughter of Joseph and Mary (Thatcher) Child. She was born 25 Feb 1718, Watertown, MA.
He married secondly, 3 Jul 1760, Watertown, MA, Elizabeth Goddard, "both of Watertown".[4] She was born 25 Feb 1717/8, Watertown, MA. She was born say 1720, possibly Watertown, MA, and died between 4 Mar 1785 and 11 May 1791, Watertown, MA.
On 19 Feb 1737/8, Joseph Whitney and wife Mary, owned the covenant.[5]

On 22 Nov 1784, Watertown, MA, his inventory was taken by Jonas White, Phinehas Stearns, and William Harrington. On 11 May 1791, Watertown, MA, an addition to his inventory was made by Jonathan Brown, Phinehas Stearns, and Samuel Wellington. On 11 May 1791, Watertown, MA, division was made, to Jonathan Whitney of Watertown, one of the sons of Joseph Whitney, late of Watertown, yeoman, decd., of 1/3 of his estate, formerly set off to Elizabeth his widow and reverted by her death, provided he pay shares to his brother Joseph (or his guardian), his deceased brother David's administrators, and Abraham, Elizabeth, and Lois, children of his sister Elizabeth Whitney, deceased, On 2 Dec 1791 and 6 Aug 1792, Watertown, MA, receipts were given by Lois Whitney (by guardian Jonathan Whitney), Jonathan Whitney, and Amos Bond as guardian for Joseph Whitney.
Pierce says the following:[8]
- In the Middlesex Register of Deeds office is found the following data: 1785, Joseph, Jonathan, and wife Susan, and Abraham and wife Mary, of Watertown, late father Joseph and brother Daniel [sic--should be David]; 1785, Joseph, Jonathan, and Abraham, in behalf of his late wife Elizabeth WHITNEY, deceased; all heirs of Joseph, deceased, of Watertown. Witness: Jonathan, Jr.

i. Joseph6 Whitney, b. 13 Mar 1737/8;[9] bapt. 19 Mar 1737/8, Watertown, MA;[10] d. before 13 Mar 1738/9, Watertown, MA. There may be only one son Joseph Whitney, since the date and month of birth are identical -- only the year differs. ii. Joseph Whitney, b. 13 Mar 1738/9;[11] d. before 28 Mar 1812, Watertown, Massachusetts, unmarried. iii. David Whitney, b. 21 Jan 1740/1;[12] bapt. 25 Jan 1740/1, Watertown, MA;[13] d. before 11 May 1791, Watertown, MA; on 4 Nov 1784, Watertown, MA, administration was granted on the estate of David Whitney, late of Watertown, laborer, deceased, intestate, granted to David Bemis, yeoman, of Watertown, who posted bond, with Jonathan Brown, Esq., and Jonas White, yeoman, both of Watertown, as sureties; on 4 Mar 1785, Watertown, MA, a list of debts due from the estate was recorded, and assets listed include 1/5 of father's estate, 2/3 of which can be obtained before the widow's death; the estate was found to be insolvent. iv. Jonathan Whitney, b. 12 Apr 1743;[14] bapt. 17 Apr 1743, Watertown, MA;[15] m. Susanna Norcross. v. Elizabeth Whitney, bapt. 23 Nov 1746; Watertown, MA,[16] forename omitted in record; d. before 3 Dec 1772; m. Abraham5 Whitney.
Joseph5 and Elizabeth (Goddard) Whitney had no children.
