His father died 17 Dec 1806, when he was about 14 years of age. His father being a farmer he continued in the same occupation til the age of 18 years, living with his mother when they sold the old homestead and moved to Bridgton, ME, which was a new town recently incorporated and being rapidly settled; there they purchased a new farm which they cultivated with fair success, his mother and sisters continuing to live with him for several years. In the war of 1812-15 he enlisted in one of the Maine regiments raised for the defense of the sea coast and was stationed at Portland and its fortifications for the defense of the city and harbor, where he served till honorably discharged.
