Richard3 Whitney (Richard2, John1), son of Richard2 and Martha (Coldham) Whitney,[1] was born 13 Jan 1660/61, Watertown, MA,[2] and died 5 Dec 1723, Stow, MA.[3]
He married about 1691, Elizabeth Sawtell,[4] daughter of Jonathan and Mary (Tarbell) Sawtell. She was born 3 Feb 1668/9, Groton, MA,[5] and died 24 Nov 1723, Stow, MA.[6]
He lived on 28 Aug 1688 at Stow, MA; taxed 3s 6d.[7]
Savage, IV:531: RICHARD, Stow, s[on] of the preced[ing] from his will only is kn[own] to us, as f[ather] of Richard, not eldest ch[ild] perhaps, b[orn] a[bout] 1704; Jonathan; Joshua, a[bout] 1707; Hannah Farr; Eliz[abeth] Wetherbee; Sarah, a[bout] 1703; Ruhamah, a[bout] 1705; and Hepzibah, a[bout] 1710; and the mo[ther] Eliz[abeth] d[ied] 24 Nov. 1723. He made his will a few days aft[er] and d[ied] 5 Dec. next, and Barry says the will was pro[bated] 23 of the same mo[nth]. The two first nam[ed] s[ons] were ex[e]c[ut]ors.
Bond, p. 643: RICHARD, b. Jan. 13, 1660-1; of Stow. His Will, dated Dec. 22, 1723, mentions son Richard (exe'r.), son Jonathan (exe'r.), son Joshua; drs. Hannah Farr, Elizabeth Wetherby, Sarah, Ruhamah, and Hepzibah.
Pierce, p. 30: He had land granted him in Stow, Oct. 24, 1682. Bond says in his History of Watertown that Elizabeth SAWTELL was b. Feb. 3, 1668; m. Aug 13, 1691, Joseph MORSE; he d. Jan. 24, 1709, and she m. 2d, feb. 10, 1713, Benjamin NURSE, Sr, of Framingham. In the library of the New England Historical and Genealogical Society, at 18 Somerset street, Boston, there is a copy of Henry Austin WHITNEY's work relative to the descendants of John and Elinor WHITNEY, presented to the society by him, containing annotations made in his own hand. Among others, one to the effect that Richard WHITNEY, of Stow, married Elizabeth SAWTELL, daughter of Jonathan SAWTELL, of Groton. He cites as authority a certain conveyance recorded in volume 13, page 197 of Middlesex Conveyances, Oct. 8, 1698. His will dated Dec. 22, 1723, mentions son Richard executor, son Jonathan executor, son Joshua, daughters Hanna FARR, Elizabeth WETHERBY, Sarah, Ruhanna and Hepzibah. He d. Dec. 15, 1723, res. Stow, Mass.
Kellogg and Threlfall: Elizabeth3, b. 3 Feb. 1668/9; mar. at Watertown 25 Aug. 1691 [see Note p. 140], Richard Whitney Jr. of Stow, Mass., (Middlesex County Deeds, 13:197).
