:"Mrs. Berry is the daughter of Wells and Demis (Holmes) Whitney, who were natives of New York State, and after their marriage in Geneva, lived there one year, then came to Michigan, and located, in 1845, on a new farm in Reading Township.  The place is now known as the Abbott farm.  It comprises a large tract of land, and after making some improvements Mr. Whitney traded for an improved farm in Cambria Township, where he made his home until his death, April 18, 1887.  He was then sixty-three years old.  The mother of Mrs. Berry died in Cambria in December, 1859.  Her father subsequently married Miss Emeline Shaddock, who survives him and is living in Hillsdale.  Mr. Whitney was a prominent man in his community, a Republican in politics, and held nearly all the local offices.  In religious matters he belonged to the Free-Will Baptist Church, with which his first wife, the mother of Mrs. Berry, was connected.  Mrs. B. was well reared and educated, completing her studies at the Hillsdale Union School, and employed herself as a teacher some time before her marriage, mostly in the district schools of this county."{{ref|1}}
