Dr. Henry Thomas9 Whitney (Josiah Billings8, Zachariah7, Zachariah6, Zachariah5, John4, Joseph3, John2, John1), son of Josiah Billings8 and Mary Ann (Patch) Whitney, was born 11 Apr 1849, Lunenburg, MA.
He married, 15 Jul 1876, Fitchburg, MA, Leurie Ann Seaver, both of Brattleboro, VT, daughter of James M. and Leurie L. (Houghton) Seaver.[1] She was born 19 Nov 1848, Sterling, MA.
He was born in Lunenburg, MA, and when only eight years of age moved to New Hampshire. He followed various vocations until eighteen years of age, when he began to fit for college. In 1870 he entered Amherst College; 1871 changed to Middlebury, Vermont, and in 1873 to Burlington, Vermont, college to the medical department. Later he entered the New York Medical university, and was graduated in medicine in 1874, He opened an office in that city, but was soon called to care of the City Insane Asylum on Ward's Island. From 1874 to 1876 he was superintending the Vermont State Insane Asylum at Brattleboro. In 1876 he went into general practice. The following year he was appointed medical missionary of the A. B. C. F. M. to Foochou, China, and has been connected with that mission ever since. He has had charge of hospitals and dispensaries, treated 75,000 patients, and performed 5,000 operations, taught medical students, learned three Chinese languages and prepared some works in Chinese. Revised Gray's Anatomy in Chinese, prepared an Anglo-Chinese Medical Vocabulary of 5,000 terms. He has prepared two physiologies, a geography, and International Sunday-school lessons in Chinese, for ten years. He has been a college trustee and is now subeditor of two medical publications. Resided 2 No. Water St., Oberlin, OH.
