Introduction

Southern research is difficult and complicated due to the lack of available records. This page is an attempt to bring some organized central location to the various family groups and records which the Whitney Research Group has been able to uncover in the hopes that we may someday be able to connect them.

Whitneys in Bermuda

The Whitney family in Bermuda was founded by Samuel Whitney of England & Sandys Tribe, Bermuda. His descendants included Samuel Whitney of St. David's Island, Bermuda; David Whitney of Pembroke Tribe, Bermuda; John Whitney of Pembroke Tribe, Bermuda; Joshua Whitney of Pembroke Tribe, Bermuda, VA & NC

Descendants of the Bermuda Whitneys in the South

One of the earliest southern Whitney families was founded by Joshua Whitney who came from Bermuda to Isle of Wight Co., VA and finally to Edgecombe Co., NC. His descendants included Jeremiah Whitney of Bermuda, Isle of Wight Co., VA, Edgecombe Co., NC, & Goochland Co., VA; Samuel Whitney, probably of NC; John Whitney of Pendleton Co., SC; probably Samuel Whitney of Martin Co., NC; Jeremiah Whitney of NC, SC, Barren Co., KY & Allen Co., KY; and perhaps Francis Whitney of Fincastle/Washington Co., VA.

Probably related to the above family were Joshua Whitney of Isle of Wight Co., VA, Joshua Whitney of Isle of Wight Co., VA, Elisha Whitney of Southampton Co., VA‎, Joshua Whitney of Southampton Co., VA, John Whitney of Southampton Co., VA & Isle of Wight Co., VA, Family:Whitney, David (c1785-1838) of Southampton Co., VA; Merit J. Whitney of Isle of Wight Co., VA & Nasemond Co., VA; William Adelbert O. Whitney of Isle of Wight Co., VA & Nasemond Co., VA.

Francis Whitney of Fincastle/Washington Co., VA was perhaps the father of Elijah Whitney of Washington Co., VA, Christian Co., KY, & Trigg Co., KY; Macon Whitney of Washington Co., VA & Barnwell Co., SC; Malcom Whitney of Washington Co., VA, GA, & Barnwell Co., SC. His son Elijah was most likely the father of Hiram Whitney of Garrard Co., KY, Warren Co., KY & Trigg Co., KY. Francis Whitney may have been the same man as the Francis Whitney of Orangeburg South Co., SC.

Francis Whitney of Orangeburg South Co., SC was probably the father or other relative of Francis Whitney of Orangeburg South Co., SC and Samuel Whitney of Orangeburg South Co., SC. Isaac L. Whitney of Orangeburg Co., SC, Blount Co., AL, & Indian Territory and his brother Hiram Whitney of SC & Walker Co,AL probably belong to this branch as they were first found in Orangeburg. DNA testing shows that they were probably related to the Samuel Whitney of Bermuda branch, potentially tying the Orangeburg branch to the Joshua Whitney branch.

Daniel Whitney of Lexington Co., SC & Barnwell Co., SC. DNA testing by a descendant of Daniel's son, Darling, is a DNA match to Samuel Whitney of Bermuda. His descendants include Darling Whitney of Lexington Co., SC, Hall Co., GA, Lawrence Co., AL, Lincoln Co., TN, & Maury Co., TN; Abby Whitney; Mansell Whitney of GA, Lawrence Co., AL, Lincoln Co., TN, & Sumner Co., TN; Elvin H. Whitney of GA, Lawrence Co., AL, Lincoln Co., TN, Maury Co., TN, Hickman Co., TN, & Giles Co., TN; Elbert H. Whitney of SC, Lexington Co., SC, Habersham Co., GA, Hall Co., GA, Lawrence Co., AL, Lincoln Co., TN, & Maury Co., TN; & Joseph Whitney of AL, Lincoln Co., TN, & Maury Co., TN.

Francis Whitney of Franklin Co., MS was probably the father of Arthur Whitney of NC, Franklin Co., MS, Catahoula Par., LA, Caldwell Par., LA, & Drew Co., AR. DNA testing by a descendant of Arthur Whitney shows that this line is also a match to the descendant of Samuel Whitney of Bermuda who has been tested.
