Family Talk:Whitney, Eli (1793-1855)

I believe that Eli Whitney's grand nephew made an error in referring to Martha's husband as John McNitt. The only John McNitt among the McNitts of Seneca County, Ohio was the one who married Susan Arnold on 14 March 1852 in Thompson Township. Ira McNitt of Kent County, Michigan was a brother of Sidney McNitt who married Juliana Whitney. Ira had also lived in Seneca County near his brother. If Ira's wife Martha is the daughter of Eli Whitney, then her date of birth should be corrected to ca. 1818, not ca. 1828. Interestingly, Ira and Sidney's brother Horace also married a Whitney - Sarah Ellen Whitney (b. 1821) - on 22 March 1846 in Thompson Township, Seneca County. I do not have her parents names. Does anybody know how she was related to Juliana and Martha? The families interconnect once again with the marriage of Joseph McNitt (first cousin of Sidney, Ira, and Horace) to Marietta Whitney, daughter of Nathan Whitney and Esther Whitney, on 28 Sept 1837 in Thompson Township. To further complicate the story, the James Whitmore mentioned in one of the other postings here as the brother of Nancy Whitmore Whitney was married to Nancy McNitt, probably a cousin to the fathers of the McNitts I have previously mentioned.
