Rev. Joseph C.8 Whitney (Joseph7, Lemuel6, Joshua5, Nathaniel4, Nathaniel3, John2, John1), son of Joseph7 and Orinda (Stafford) Whitney, was born 14 Apr 1818, Springfield, VT, and died after 1880.

He married, 10 Jul 1849, New York, NY, Eliza Baird. She was born 11 Dec 1826, PA, and died after 1880.

He worked for his father until he was twenty years of age, then he devoted his time to obtaining an education. He went to Oberlin college in 1840, graduated 1845; 1847 went to Union Theological seminary, New York, and graduated in 1849. In June, 1849, he was licensed to preach by the 4th Presbytery, New York. He was married to Miss Eliza Baird and removed to Minnesota, and in May, 1850, he was ordained to the gospel ministry by the Presbytery of Galena, IL. He settled at Stillwater in 1849 and organized the First Presbyterian church, Stillwater, MN, Dec 1849. He removed to Minneapolis, Sep 1853, and took charge of the First Presbyterian church of Minneapolis during 1859, 1860 and 1861. He was at Forest City, MN, and in Aug 1862, re-enlisted in the army and became captain of Company D, 6th Regiment, Minnesota Volunteers. He was in the campaign of 1862-63 against the Indians of Minnesota under General Sibley, and was in all the engagements of those two years against the Indians. In 1864 the regiment went south, located at Helena, AR, and in the fall and winter were quartered at Saint Louis. Then went south to New Orleans at the battle of Blukeley, near Mobile, and up to Montgomery, was promoted to Captain A. Q. M., May 1865. Since the war he has resided at Minneapolis engaged in educational and church extension and being active in any line of business; resided Minneapolis, MN.
