Family:Whitney, John (fl. 1524)
John Whitney "Senior" of Norton Canon, Herefordshire, parentage unknown, fl. 1524, and provided that all of the subsidy and muster records listed below refer to him, died after 1546.
He was probably the "John Whiteney" who was listed in Norton (Norton Canon) and Calverhill (Calver Hill), Grimsworth Hundred, Herefordshire in the First Post-Memorial Payment in 1524 of the 1523 Subsidy Act, who was charged £4 2s on goods.[1]
He was probably the "John Wytney senior" (listed with "John Wytney junior") who was listed in Norton Canon in the 1539 Herefordshire Muster Roll as too poor to provide weaponry, but who supplied a gleith and a sallet.[2]
He was possibly the "John Wytney" who was listed in Norton Canon in the 1542 Herefordshire Muster Roll as a Billman, but since this was the only Whitney individual listed for Norton Canon, this was more probably the other John Whitney who was listed as "junior" in other records.[3]
He was probably the "Johannes Whytney senior" who was listed in Norton (Norton Canon), Grimsworth Hundred, Herefordshire in the First Payment in 1544 of the 1543 Subsidy Act, who was charged £10 6s 8d pro bonis.[4]
He was probably the "Johannes Whytney senior" who was listed in Norton (Norton Canon), Grimsworth Hundred, Herefordshire in the First Payment in 1545 of the 1543 Subsidy Act, who was charged £10 3s 4d pro bonis.[5]
He was probably the "John Whytney senior" who was listed in Norton (Norton Canon), Grymsworth Hundred, Herefordshire in the Benevolence of 1545, who was charged 8s.[6]
He was probably the "*** Whytney" who was listed in Norton (Norton Canon), Grimsworth Hundred, Herefordshire in the Residue of the Third Payment in 1546 of the 1543 Subsidy Act, who was charged £8 16s pro bonis.[7]
