James8 Whitney (James S.7, Jesse6, David5, Nathan4, Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1), son of James S.7 and Eliza (Reed) Whitney, was born about 1831, Boston, MA, and died 1 Apr 1898, Chelsea, MA, aged 68 years, of heart disease, widowed.[1] He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery and Crematory, Everett, MA.[2]

He married firstly, 29 Nov 1855, Dover, MA, Harriet A. Ketchum, daughter of Samuel Ketchum.[3] She was born about 1837, Boston, MA, and died before 1872.

He married secondly, 3 Jun 1872, Boston, MA, Emma H. Currier, daughter of Arthur M. and Mary Ann (-----) Currier.[4] She was born about 1848, Holliston, MA, and died 13 Aug 1872, Boston, MA, aged 24 years 5 months 4 days, of typhoid pneumonia.[5] She was buried in Lake Grove Cemetery, Holliston, MA.[6]

He married thirdly (but said secondly), 5 Feb 1874, Chelsea, MA, Ellen B. (Smith) Shipman, daughter of William and Lavinia E. (-----) Smith.[7] She was born about 1838, Boston, MA, and died 2 Feb 1898, Chelsea, MA, aged 60 years, of ovarian tumor and cancer of uterus.[8] She had married firstly, 30 Dec 1856, Chelsea, MA, William N. Shipman.

Private; res. West Roxbury; butcher; 31; enlisted 4 Aug 1862; mustered 10 Aug 1862; mustered out 6 Jun 1865. Listed on grave stone: James Whitney, 9th Mass. Batt'y., 1830-1898
