He married, 13 Sep 1840, Lura Johnson. She was born in 1815, Schroon Lake, NY, and died after 1905, Edinburg, NY. She married secondly, 16 Apr 1865, Elisha G. King.
Mary was a school teacher in Edinburg, NY

- In the 1850 census, James and his family were next door to Benjamin Whitney, age 65, b. MA and his wife "Epsee" Whitney, who were known to have had a son named James.
