Family:Whitney, Isaac (1746-a1800)
Isaac5 Whitney (George4, Jonathan3, Benjamin2, John1), son of George4 and Sarah (Couzens) Whitney, was born 7 Sep 1746, Holliston, MA,[1] and died after 1800.
Marriage intentions were published 4 Mar 1771, Hopkinton, MA, for him "of Holliston" and Mary Tombs.[2] He married, 8 May 1771, Holliston, MA, Mary Tombs "of Hopkinton",[3] daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth (Collar) Tombs.[4] She was born 25 Apr 1747, Hopkinton, MA.[5]
On 29 Apr 1754, Holliston, MA, Sarah Whitney, widow, was appointed guardian to Isaac, Hannah, and Mercy, under 14, children of George Whitney late of Holliston, and posted bond with Gershom Eames, yeoman, and Joseph Cousins, yeoman, both of Holliston, as sureties. On 16 Feb 1756, Holliston, MA, James Haven of Framingham, yeoman, was appointed guardian of Isaac, Hannah, and Mercy, under 14, children of George Whitney, late of Holliston, and posted bond, with Joseph Cozens, yeoman, and Isaac Hill, yeoman, both of Holliston, as sureties. On 4 May 1761, Holliston, MA, James Haven, yeoman, of Framingham, was appointed guardian of Isaac Whitney, son of George Whitney of Holliston, and posted bond with James Haven, Jr., yeoman, and Squire Haven, yeoman, both of Framingham, as sureties.[6]
It is nearly certain that he was the Isaac Whitney enumerated in 1791 and 1800 in Stamford, Bennington Co., VT.[7]

George Whitney, b. 12 Jan 1780, Stamford, VT.[11] He may be identical to George W. Whitney (c1778-a1840), of Henderson, NY. v. Mary Whitney, b. 19 Feb 1782, Stamford, VT.[12] vi. Betsey Whitney, b. 31 Aug 1788, Stamford, VT.[13]

The daughter Hannah above may be the Hannah Whitney, b. 27 Dec 1777, MA, who married Luther6 Whitney of Adams, MA, and Madrid, NY.

- 1800, Stamford, Bennington Co., VT: Isaac Whitney, 2 males 16-26, 1 male under 10, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 10-16. This was undoubtedly his son Isaac Jr., wife, a baby boy, possibly with brother George and sisters Mary and Betsey.

7.^ The Whitney Census Identification Project accounted for all known men of the name Isaac Whitney in 1790 except two. Isaac Whitney of Boston does not appear there in records after 1782, but his younger sons were in the area as late as 1808, so he probably had died and was thus not the Isaac who showed up in Stamford. That leaves only Isaac of Holliston, MA, who is listed there until 1778 and then vanishes. His appearance with children born 1780-1788, and his son's marriage in 1799 there, together with naming a son George, is convincing evidence that the Holliston man and the Stamford man were one and the same. Absolute proof has not yet been found.
