Harvey Brooks8 Whitney (Joseph7, Joshua6, Caleb5, Jonathan4, Richard3, Richard2, John1), son of Joseph7 and Nancy (Sawin) Whitney, was born 29 Sep 1836, Gardner, MA,[1] and died after 1900.
He married, 1 Aug 1860, Westmoreland, NH [recorded in Gardner, MA], Ellen R. Bennett, daughter of Josiah and Sarah G. (-----) Bennett.[2] She was born 18 Jan 1836, Westmoreland, NH, and died after 1900.
He was born in Gardner, Worcester County, MA. His father's name was Joseph Whitney, and his mother's name Nancy Sawin Whitney. He was the youngest of twelve children of said parents, eleven of whom grew to adult age. He was educated in the common schools and academies of New England; for several years was employed as teacher in the public schools and as mechanic in the chair shops of Gardner. In 1867 he moved to Elwood, NJ, and taught in the public schools of New Jersey until 1890. Having passed successfully the civil service examination he was appointed clerk of the Pension Bureau at Washington, DC, in Nov 1890, which position he still occupies. While a resident of New Jersey he served on the board of township committee for a time, also on the county board of chosen freeholders for two years; resided 400 Ninth St., N.E., Washington, DC.

She graduated at the Salem, MA, Normal school in 1892, and is now a teacher in the public schools in Washington, DC.
