Joshua Swain⁸ Whitney (Samuel⁷, Samuel⁶, Samuel⁵, Abraham⁴, Joseph³, John², Henry¹), son of Samuel⁷ and Lydia (King) Whitney, was born 20 Jul 1842, Cape Negro Island, North East Harbor, NS, and died after 1892.

He married firstly, 1 Jan 1867, North East Harbor, NS, Julia Matilda Swain, daughter of Chapman and Hannah (King) Swain. She was born 16 Nov 1846, North East Harbor, NS, and died after 1881.

He married secondly, 6 Sep 1892, Aspen, NS, Sarah J. McKeen.

He was a carpenter and joiner. They settled at Canso, NS, and were living there in 1874.
