Jerusha5 Whitney (Richard4, Henry3, John2, Henry1), daughter of Richard4 and Esther (Clark) Whitney, was born 25 or 28 Jun 1755, Ridgefield, CT,[1] and died 29 or 31 Jul 1840, St. Albans, VT, in her 86th year. She was buried in St. Albans Bay, VT.

She married firstly, 22 Dec 1774, Ridgefield, CT, David Gates,[2] of Ridgefield, possibly the youngest child of Samuel and Rachel (Hayes) Gates. He was born June 1753, and died 19 Jun 1793, Hinesburgh, VT, of consumption. He was buried in the Hinesburgh Cemetery, Hinesburgh, VT.

She married secondly, 1802, Lawrence Delong, a farmer, of a town adjoining Hinesburgh, VT.

David, a farmer, and Jerusha moved, about 1789, to Hinesburgh, VT. In 1797 she removed, with some of her children, to Paris, NY, but returned to Hinesburgh, VT, in the winter of 1797-8. In her last years she dwelt with her daughter, Mrs. Betsey (Gates) Brooks, at St. Albans, VT.

i. Esther Gates, b. 28 Feb 1776, Ridgebury, in Ridgefield, CT; m. 1794, Reuben Tullar, a farmer, of St. Alban's, Vt., where they dwelt, during the remainder of their lives, on one farm.
ii. Ira Gates, b. 4 Jun 1777, Ridgebury, in Ridgefield, CT; d. 18 Jan 1860, Ellington, NY; bur. Ellington, NY; m. 30 Sep 1798, Hinesburgh, VT, Clarissa Heath, b. 24 Aug 1780, d. 20 Jan 1854, Ellington, NY, bur. Ellington, NY; a farmer. They lived in Malone, NY, from 1804 to 1815, and in Perry, NY, about nine years. They then moved to Ellington, NY. He cleared a large farm in Ellington; helped to build the first meeting-house; was a constituent member of the first Christian Church; was soon chosen one of its deacons, and held the office till his death.
iii. Electa Gates, b. 11 Apr 1779, Ridgebury, in Ridgefield, CT; d. 29 Oct 1816, Sheldon, NY; bur. Sheldon Cemetery, Sheldon, NY; m. 1798, Hinesburgh, VT, Joel Phippany, son of James Phippany, of New Milford, CT, d. 8 Apr 1834, Sheldon, Cemetery, bur. Sheldon Cemetery, Sheldon, NY, a farmer and shoemaker. They dwelt at Hinesburgh till the Winter of 1815, and then moved to Sheldon, NY. He married (2) Chloe McWhorter.
iv. Betsey Gates, b. 7 Apr 1781, Ridgebury, in Ridgefield, CT; d. 29 Sep 1859, Chateaugay, NY; bur. Chateaugay, NY; m. 9 Nov 1802, St. Alban's, VT, b. 27 Feb 1778, Pittsford, VT, Adonijah Brooks, d. 10 Oct 1865, Chateaugay, NY, bur. Chateaugay, NY, son of Adonijah and Olive (Harrington) Brooks, of St. Alban's, VT; a farmer and hotel-keeper. They dwelt in St. Alban's, VT, then in Essex, VT, and finally in Chateaugay, NY.
v. Lucy Gates, b. 20 Sep 1783, Ridgebury, in Ridgefield, CT; d. 26 Mar 1867, Pierrepont, NY; m. 1808, St. Alban's, VT, Harrington Brooks, son of Azariah Brooks, and nephew of Adonijah Brooks, mentioned above. He was killed, 4 Nov. 1811, by a shot from a party of revenue officers, on Lake Champlain, near Alburgh, VT, "in company with one Miner Hilliard." She m.(2) 6 Jun 1820, St. Alban's, VT, Aaron Howard, b. Conway, MA, 21 Jan 1780, son of Moses and Mary (Merrills) Howard.
vi. David Gates, b. 6 Feb 1786, Ridgebury, in Ridgefield, CT; d. 19 Nov 1863, Ellington, NY; bur. Ellington, NY; m. 11 Jan 1816, Bristol, VT, Polly Hall, born 13 Oct. 1787, dau. of Gershom and Dorcas Hall; a farmer. They settled in Perry, NY; but moved, in 1823, to Ellington, NY, and in 1859, to Ellington Centre. She was yet living in Ellington, in June 1874. He served in the war of 1812.
vii. Richard Whitney Gates, b. 30 Apr 1788, Ridgebury, in Ridgefield, CT; d. 25 Mar 1856, Ellington, NY; bur. Ellington Cemeetery, Ellington, NY; m. 20 Jan 1819, Mount Morris, NY, Rachel Murch, b. 27 Jul 1800; a physician; studied medicine with Doctors Waterhouse, of Malone, NY; and Perigo, of VT; settled at Mount Morris, NY. They moved to Shelby, Orleans Co., NY, and in 1841 he was a member of the Assembly of the State of New York, from that county. He afterward engaged in trade, and moved to Ellington, NY, where he continued in business for several years. He served, it is said, in "the Light Dragoons", in the war of 1812.
viii. Ardil Gates, b. 11 Aug 1792, Hinesburgh, VT; m. 23 Jun 1814, Bristol, VT, Orrilla Hall, b. 30 Sep 1795, Mansfield, CT, d. 26 Jul 1854, Leboeuf, PA, bur. Ellington Cemetery, Ellington, NY, dau. of Gershom and Dorcas (Richardson) Hall, of Bristol; a farmer. They moved, in 1816, to Perry, NY; and about 1822, to Castile, NY; and from there, in 1831, to Ellington, NY. He m.(2) 22 Dec 1857, Eaton Rapids, MI, Rachel Longstreet, b. 25 Apr 1798, Monmouth, NJ, dau. of Richard and Deborah (Romaine) Longstreet, of Monmouth Co., NJ. They dwelt at Mankato, MN, in Aug. 1874. He served in the N. Y. S. Militia during the war of 1812, and lived to enjoy a pension of $96 per year.
