He was adopted by Abigail B. (Ford) Whitney. The records of the Tewksbury Almshouse show that Frederick Hall was {admitted 7 May 1861, age 2, from Lowell, born Lowell, discharged 17 May 1861, to mother in Lowell. In 1867, he was visited: "Abby Whitney keeps a boarding house in Centerville. Notes

Frederick's death record gives his mother's maiden name as Abby Ford, but omits his father's name. She was his adoptive mother, not his biological. It seems extremely likely that he was the "George F." Hall living with Sarah A. (Wyman) Hall in the 1860 census, both in Abby Whitney's boarding house. Perhaps his middle initial F stood for Frederick. No birth record has been found for either George or Frederick Hall in Massachusetts vital records. His father was William R. Hall, son of Uriah and Olive (Rand) Hall, born about 1829, Hookset, NH, and died 26 Aug 1858, Tyngsborough, MA, age 29. His mother was Sarah Abigail Wyman, daughter of Asa and Mercy (Hall) Wyman, 12 Dec 1832, Tyngsborough, MA, and died 31 Dec 1887, Hillsborough Co., NH. The 1860 census reports, however, that she was born in St. Kitts, West Indies. It also says that she was married within the year. Sure enough, she m. 22 Sep 1860, Lowell, MA to George Lawrence Newhall, 39 (so b. 1821, said in Lancaster), son of James and Mary (-----) Newhall, as his second wife and her second husband. They were in Chelmsford, MA, in 1865 and 1870, and back in Lowell, MA, in 1880. They had ten children born 1861 through 1879.
