Family:Whitney, Flavilla Ann (1819-b1855)
Flavilla Ann7 Whitney (Levi6, Abel5, Nathan4, Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1), daughter of Levi6 and Happy (Higgins) Whitney, was born 17 Apr 1819, Standish, ME,[1] and was baptized 16 Aug 1819, Standish, ME.[2]
Intentions of marriage were published 20 Oct 1848, Windham, ME, for her "of Standish" and James Field "of Windham".[3] She "of Standish" married, 4 Nov 1848, Standish, ME, James Field "of Windham",[4] possibly son of Zachariah and Sarah (-----) Field. He was born 9 Sep 1812, Hollis, ME, and died 2 Jun 1881, Gorham, ME.
The birth to Levi and Happy (Higgins) Whitney of their daughter Flavilla Ann Whitney on 17 Apr 1819 is documented in the town records of Standish, ME. She must have been known by her middle name, Ann, because it appears that way in some records. She is found as Ann Whitney in the Standish records of the publishment of her intention to marry, and in her marriage record to James Field. She is also found as Ann Field in the James Field family in the 1850 census of Windham, ME. James Field is possibly the son of Zachariah and Sarah Field, born 25 Sep 1812 in Hollis, ME.
Ann married James Field in 1848, and is found with him in the 1850 census of Windham, ME. In the family are four Field children, all born between 1836 and 1846. While Ann is biologically old enough to be their mother, the convention of that era would lead one to assume that these are step-children to Ann, and their mother had probably died.
The 1860 census finds James Field residing in Westbrook, ME, along with several of the previous children of 1850, as well as Adelaide Field, age 5. However, the name of his wife is now Margaret Field. No record of Ann’s death is yet found. James Field married Margaret Cobb about 1856. Margaret Cobb was born 28 Apr 1828 in Westbrook, ME, daughter of Joshua and Eunice (Hawkes) Cobb. By 1860 she had born a son, Colby Field, age 2 years.
James Field died 2 Jun 1881, and Margaret Field died 9 Jun 1892 in Gorham, ME. They are both buried in the Knight Cemetery #1, Windham Center, ME. Buried with them is their son Colby. His grave marker indicates that he was their son.
It appears that the only surviving child of James and Ann Field was their daughter Adelaide, from the 1860 census. Her location in the 1870 census has not yet been determined. On 23 Dec 1873 in Tuftonborough, NH, Addie F. Whitney was married to Samuel H. Gilman. Samuel was 29 years old, and born in Tuftonborough, son of James and Clarissa Gilman. Addie was 20 years old and born in Windham, ME, daughter of Joseph and Harriet Whitney. Joseph was the brother of Flavilla Ann Whitney.
Addie and Samuel H. Gilman are found in the 1880 census in Tuftonborough, NH, and in the 1900 census in Lowell, MA, where she is called “Frances” Gilman. Adelaide Frances Gilman died in Somerville, MA, 18 Sep 1907. Her death certificate informant was her husband, Samuel H. Gilman. Adelaide was born in Gorham, ME, and was 53 years 3 months 14 days old. Her maiden name was Field. Her father was James Field, and her mother was Flavilla Ann Whitney, both born in Standish, ME. She was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett, MA.
One can make a conjecture concerning the discrepancy between her name and parentage on her marriage record and those on her death record. Joseph and Harriet Whitney were close relatives, and Addie’s mother had died when she was about 5 years old. Her father had remarried, and she may have been placed thereafter in the care of her biological mother’s close family. She probably came to know them as her parents in the decade of the 1860’s. There were no children in in the Joseph Whitney family in Saco, ME, in the 1870 census. Addie was then 16 years old, and was probably working and on her own.
