The Whitney Research Group's Phoenix Project
Project Coordinator, Editor: Robert WardIn 1878, Stephen Whitney Phoenix published The Whitney family of Connecticut, and its affiliations; being an attempt to trace the descendants, as well in the female as the male lines, of Henry Whitney, from 1649 to 1878; to which is prefixed some account of the Whitneys of England. (New York : Priv. Print. [Bradford Press] 1878), 3 volumes. In order to better assist Whitney researchers, members of the Whitney Research Group (WRG) have decided to undertake the task of transcribing this work and making it readily available to all researchers.
The book is being transcribed verbatim, including any misspellings and known genealogical errors. Once complete, the Whitney Research Group will be adding links or notes to areas with proven genealogical errors. We have attempted to render a version as close to the typography of the original as possible, using HTML.
If you notice a transcription error, please being it to my attention. me and I will make the correction.
Thanks are due to Rene Lewis Lawrie, Joan Hicks, Mary Ann Lindsay, and Marion Walter, who assisted in scanning and transcribing various parts of this work.
Project Status:
44.14% of genealogy pages complete
6.82% of back matter complete
Since the book treats descendants of Henry1 Whitney of all surnames, through both male and female lines, many pages mention no people bearing the Whitney surname. Because of the magnitude of this project, those are being postponed for later transcription. All 669 pages covering descendants bearing the surname Whitney have been completed. This includes all such pages in all three volumes of the book, that is, pages 1 through 2475. Work on this project is sporadic for the time being. If you would like certain other pages to be transcribed and posted, feel free to me.
See a description of the transcription process. On average, each page takes about 15 minutes to generate.
