Jacobus, Donald Lines, "Joseph Smith of Lyme, Conn.," TAG, vol. 30 (1954), pp. 214-216.
[p. 216]
"6. Deborah Smith, b. 7 Apr 1731 [in East Haddam, as recorded in Lyme]; m. at Branford, 17 Jan. 1750/1, John Whitney, b. at Stratfield, Conn., 17 Jan 1719/20, d. at Branford, 29 Mar 1805. They had eight children, two of whom bore the names of Joseph and Margaret, presumably after her parents. In the Whitney Family (1878) by S. Whitney Phoenix, 1:32, 88-90, this family is given, and it is stated that Deborah was born in New Haven but the date is not stated. She was certainly born in East Haddam, lived in childhood in Lyme, and later was of Branford. Since the statement of New Haven birth was probably obtained prior to 1878 from grandchildren then living, the present writer believes they may have been misled by the knowledge that she and they had relatives in New Haven, which would be the case if one or more of her brothers settled in New Haven."
