- William1 Smith bought land from Henry Whitney, before 1670, and then sold it to his son Joseph2 Smith.

- 49. Samuel3 Smith [son of Samuel2 and Rachel (Marvin) Smith (William1)], born (say 1686), died at Ridgefield, Conn., 25 Jan. 1764; married first, 13 June 1717, Sarah Whitney, who died 22 Dec. 1720; married second, 21 June 1722, Elizabeth (Hicock) Benedict. His will, 20 Jan. 1760, proved 14 Feb. 1764, calls him 'formerly of Norwalk now of Ridgefield,' and in Ridgefield records he was often called 'Norwalk Samuel' to distinguish him from his contemporary 'Milford Samuel.'

Samuel, b. 9 July 1719; d. at Ridgefield, 20 Jan. 1782; will 6 Jan. 1782, proved 12 Mar. 1782, says he is 'infected with dangerous disease'; m. 18 May 1743, Mary Northrup, who d. 26 Dec. 1781. - . . . Thomas Ingersol was made Lieutenant in 1796 in Tioga County in Major Commandant William Whitney's Batalion [Council of Appointment, New York, 1:355]. The Whitneys were prominent early settlers of Chenango [Binghamton], then in Tioga, later in Broome, County.
