FRANK WHITNEY, of Boston, a resident member since 1917, was born at Lynn, Mass., 2 July 1846, the son of Israel and Mary Hopkins (Flagg) Whitney, and died in Boston, unmarried, 30 October 1922.
He was a descendant of John1 Whitney, who came to New England in the Elizabeth & Ann in 1635, with his wife Elinor and five sons, and settled at Watertown, Mass., through John2 of Watertown, who came to New England with his parents and married Ruth Reynolds of Boston, Benjamin3 of Watertown, who married Abigail Hagar, Daniel4 of Watertown, who was born there 17 July 1700, married Dorothy Taintor, and died in 1775, Dr. Elisha6 of Beverly, Mass., A.B. (Harvard, 1766), A.M. (ib., 1769), who was born at Watertown 27 February 1747, married (intention recorded at Ipswich, Mass., 22 June 1776) Eunice Farley, and died 22 February 1807, and Capt. Israel7, his father, who was born at Beverly 4 November 1797 and married there, 11 May 1826, Mary Hopkins Flagg, born at Beverly 21 July 1804, the daughter of Isaac and Elizabeth (Wilson) Flagg.
His early education was received at dames' schools, and afterwards, from 1854 to 1861, he was a pupil at the Chauncy Hall School, where he was perpared for college. He entered Norwich (Vt.) University in 1861, but spent only a year there, leaving the university in 1862 to take up a business career.
His first position was that of assistant in the office of William Perkins, merchant. In September 1862 he was employed by Israel G. Whitney & Company, merchants, with whom he remained until November 1868, when he went to Calcutta, India, as assistant to Whitney Brothers & Company, merchants. In 1872 he was made a resident member of the firm at Calcutta, and remained there until the firm gave up business in 1904. In his later years he resided in Boston.

50. WILLIAM5 WINCHESTER (Rev. Jonathan4, Henry3, John2, John1), of Watertown, born at Ashburnham 13 Sept. 1764, died 18 June 1833. He married at Watertown, 21 Apr. 1796, GRACE BISCO, born 2 Oct. 1767, died 29 Mar. 1822, aged 54, daughter of Josiah and Grace (Whitney).
When only fifteen years of age he saw service in Rhode Island in the Revolutionary Army. From 27 Dec. 1779 to 8 May 1780 he was in the household of Rev. Ebenezer Parkman of Westborough, in whose diary several references to him appear, according to which he was at that time in poor health. Nevertheless, in 1781, he, with his brother Jonathan, again served in the Army for nearly two months. After his marriage he lived in Watertown.

  3. SARAH, b. 15 July 1800; d. at Roxbury 9 Aug. 1874; m. 27 Apr. 1823 JOHN WOODWARD (1790-1852) of Brookline. Samuel Guild and Miss Grace Winchester Minns of Boston are her grandchildren.
  4. DANIEL, b. in Oct. 1802; d. unm. 10 July 1827.
  5. REBECCA CLARK, b. in 1805; d. unm. at Watertown 18 Dec. 1849.
  6. NANCY, b. 3 Dec. 1806; m. in Mar. 1827 SOLOMON FLAGG STEARNS of Brookline. Five daughters, one of whom m. James Manning Seamans and another Thomas Baldwin Griggs.
