- Elizabeth Porter, whose diary covering 54 years of life in Hadley, Mass., is published herewith, the only child of Moses and Elizabeth (Pitkin) Porter, was born in Hadley 15 Nov. 1747; she died there 70 years later, 11 Nov. 1817. In fulfillment of this birthright and as the wife of Charles Phelps, whom she married in June 1770, she became one of the distinguished matrons of the area.

- 1798 April 15 Sun: Mr. Hop[son]: Psalm 78 & 36 & Matt 25 & 32. The bridge foundered - we rode around [over Colemans brook]. Wednesday Mr. Hop: visit has been up to the Mills to marry Whitney (who lives with us) to Jerusha Murdock. Thursday forenoon went into town - did many arrands - home about 2. Dr. Colmans wife & Perez Smiths wife visit here - Friday I visit at Mr. Gaylords. Satt. Mrs. Shipman visit here.

- He married first, Elizabeth Hapgood, died in Harvard 24 Jan. 1741/2, aged 39 years 9 months 15 days (gravestone); secondly (intention 28 May 1743, Sarah Rice of Stow, d. 3 Dec. 1762, aged 53 years; and thirdly, in Lunenburg, Mass., 9 May 1764, Elizabeth (Hartwell) Gibson, died in Harvard 1 Feb. 1792, widow of Capt. - He married about 1742 Violetta Rice, died 10 Feb. 1801, aet. 79 (gravestone). Her baptismal name is Violata, Violate and Violetta in the Worcester Vital Records and Violaty on her gravestone.

- 47. Samuel4 Gates (Samuel3, Simon2, Stephen1), born perhaps in Pomfret, Conn., in 1710, died in Ridgefield, Conn., 30 Sept. 1798, aet. 84 years.
- He married there, 1 April 1734, Rachel Hayes. It is believed that she was the Rachel Hayes, daugher of James and Mary (Allen) Hayes, born in Norwalk, Conn., 4 March 1711.

- ment in the pension records, d. in Essex 2 Sept. 1845, aged 85 years. Resided in Salisbury, Conn., 1781 and 1782, in Hinesburg, Vt., in 1786; and afterward in Essex. He was a soldier in the American Revolution and applied for a pension 18 April 1818, residence, Essex. He was for some time a prisoner of war.
- David, b. in June 1753; d. in Hinesburg, Vt., 19 June 1793; m. in Ridgefield, 22 Dec. 1774, Jerusha Whitney, d. in St. Albans, Vt., 29 or 31 July 1840, who m. (2) in Hinesburg, in 1802, Lawrence Delong. Removed to Hinesburg about 1786; his widow removed to Paris, N. Y., but afterward returned to Hinesburg.

- 51. John4 Gates (John3, Thomas2, Stephen1), born in Stow, Mass., 15 Oct. 1713 ("old style"), died there 24 May 1790 (gravestone). In the latter part of his life he kept a diary in which he calle 26 Oct. his birthday. This date was "new style".
- He married about 1736 Mary Whitney, born 24 Nov. 1715. She was mentioned in his will, dated 3 May 1790 and proved 15 Sept. 1790.

- John, b. 12 Sept. 1748; d. in Stow 25 Nov. 1814; m. there, 19 Feb. 1778 or 1779, Catherine Wetherbee, d. 13 June 1834.
- Caleb, b. 14 July 1751; d. in Acton, now Townshend, Vt., 14 Aug. 1827; m. in Bolton, Mass., 10 March 1776, Mindwell Oakes, b 23 March 1746, d. 22 Nov. 1826.
- Mary, b. 25 April 1753; m. 19 Jan. 1780 Thomas Wetherbee, Jr.
- Thomas, b. 5 June 1755; d. 14 Feb. 1833; m. 4 June 1778 Lydia Hale, b. 6 Jan. 1760, d. 17 June 1817.
