Will of Hugh Whitney of Coole, Cheshire, 8 December [1697]

In the Name of God Amen the eight day of December in the Ninth yeare of the Reigne of our Soveraigne Lord William the third by the grace of God of England Scotland Ffrance & Ireland King defender of the Ffaith etc. Anno dom(ini) I Hugh Whitney of Coole in the County of Chester Gent being infirme of body but of Sound and perfect Memory (praise be given to Almighty God for the same) but Knowing the uncertainty of this Life & being desirous to settle things in order doe make and ordeine this my Last Will and testament (hereby Revoking all former will or wills by mee made in manner and form following Ffirst and principally I com(m)end my Soule into the hands of Almighty God my Creator Assuredly believing that by the pretious death & merritts of my Blessed Saviour & Redeemer Christ Jesus I shall receive full pardon & free Remission of all my Sinns & be Eternally Saved & my Body to the Earth from whence it was taken to be buryed in Such decent & Christian manner as to my Executor hereafter named shall be thought Convenient And as to my temperall Estate now Remaining unsettled I dispose of the Same in manner following First I will that all the debts (if any happen to be) that I owe to any person in Right or Conscience be paid or ordained to be paid within Convenient time after my decease Item whereas by virtue of a certaine Inventory of Settlement made at or about the time of my marriage with my first wife there is (amongst other things therein contained) a provision for the Changeing of all or Some part of my Reall Estate with any Sume or Sumes of money not exceeding the Sume of Sixe Hundred poundes to & for the portion or portions of Such younger Child or Children by mee Lawfully to be begotten on the body of my said wife And for as Much as I have already preferred in Marriage my Eldest daughter Frances pursuant to my power as af(oresai)d in and by the said Marriage Settlement : in full prosecution of Such power I hereby Change my Reall Estate with the Sume of Three Hundred poundes in part of the portion of my younger daughter Elizabeth Whitney to be paid her at the Age of twenty one yeares or day of her marriage whether shall first happen with Shuteable maintenance in the meane time Item I give and bequeath to my said daughter Elizabeth Whitney the Sume of one Hundred poundes in Augmentation of her portion Item I give and bequeath to my Sonne Robert Whitney the Sume of Tenne poundes Item I give and bequeath to my s(ai)d daughter Frances dodd the Sume of Tenne pounds in Augmentation of her fortune already given her Item I give & bequeath to my granddaughter Elizabeth dodd the Sume of Tenne poundes Item I give and bequeath to my Grandaughter Dorothy dodd the Like Sume of Tenne poundes Item I give and bequeath to my Said daughter Elizabeth Whitney the further Sume of Tenne poundes of Lawfull money of England Item As to all my Rest & Residue of my goods Consisting of Household goods & Cattle Corne Cheese & Such Like (All the heire Looms in my as also my utensells of Husbandry And all the furniture in the Hall Chamber & Closet Adjoining which I give to my s(ai)d sonne Robert Whitney onely excepted as also the Chest in the Hall Chamber with what shall be found in it which I give to my s(ai)d daughter Elizabeth Likewise excepted) I give and bequeath the Same equally to be divided between my s(ai)d Sonne Robert Whitney & my daughter Elizabeth Whitney Lastly I Constitute ordaine & Appoint my s(ai)d Sonne Robert Whitney Sole Executor of this my Last will & testament & to whom I give all the rest of my Estate In Witness hereof I have hereunto put my hand & seale the daye and yeare first above written
