WHITNEY OF BRAYFORT HOUSE.

    SIR BENJAMIN WHITNEY, Knt., of Brayfort House, Bray on Wicklow, Clerk of the Crown and Clerk of the Peace, and Registrar of Titles for co. Mayo, b. 23 Dec 1833; m. 12 April 1860, Annabella, 2nd dau. of Isaac North-Bomford, of Ferrans House, and Gallow, co. Meath (see that family). She d. 16 Jan. 1899, leaving surviving issue,

1. Pelinda.
2. Mabel Rosamond.

    Lineage. - - This family derives its name from the lordship of Whitney, co. Hereford. Sir Eustace Whitney, Knt., 1306, Lord of Pencombe, Little Cowarn and Whitney, was M.P. for Herefordshire 6 EDWARD II, 1312-13, 1351-52, 1376-7, and 1379-80. Sir Robert Whitney, Knt., 1553, was Sheriff of co. Hereford. James Whitney was Chief Sergeant of Connaught and Clauricarde 1565. John Whitney had a grant of Shyan or Shean, Queen's Co., 26 Apr 1569. He m. Cecilia Skerrett, and d. 20 April, 1581, leaving a son, Nicholas Whitney, whose son John Whitney, of Shean, d. 10 July, 1594, leaving a son, Robert Whitney, of Shean, living 1602 and 1634, obtained a re-grant of the Manor of Shean by patent 1 July, 1615. His great-grandson, John Whitney, son of Henry and grandson of John, sold the Manor of Shean 9 Aug 1661. Thomas Whitney, b. at Shean, Queen's Co., son of Thomas Whitney, entered Trin. Coll., Dublin, 17 Nov 1685, aged 18.

    THOMAS WHITNEY, of Moneytucker, co. Wexford, made his will 11 Feb. 1725, which was proved 9 Jan. 1726. He left, by Rebecca, his wife, Children:

1. James, of Moneytucker.
2. John, of Moneytuckerr, m. Oct. 1750, Alice Pooley, and left issue.
3. Richard, left a son, Thomas, living 1725.
4. Luke, of Mistereen, co. Wexford, whose will, dated 7 April, 1771, was proved 18 April following. He left, by Margaret his wife,
1. Thomas, of Merton, co. Wexford, m. 1790, Alithea, dau. of Thomas Whitney, of Bush Park, and widow of Nicholas Whitney, of Old Ross. She d. 13 Oct. 1835. He d. 4 Feb. 1831, leaving issue,

(2) John, Lieut. German Legion, killed at Albuera 1811.
(3) Thomas Annesley, of Merton, b. 25 Oct 1794; m. 16 March, 1825, Julia, dau. of Luke Gaven. She d. 14 Aug. 1863. He d. 28 April, 1876, leaving issue,
1. Mary Elizabeth, m. Col. Alexander William Gordon, and d. 14 Dec. 1862.
2. Alice Julia, m. 1848, Rev. Arthur Eden. She d. 1897.
3. Amelia Sarah, m. 1859, Col. Henry Alexander Hewetson, and d. 1893.
2. John, m. Anne, sister of Andrew Whitney. His will, dated 22 July, 1783, was proved 14 Aug. 1784. He left issue,

    BENJAMIN WHITNEY, of Castleview, Old Ross, b. 1766; m. 29 April, 1801, Alicia, dau. of Thomas Kough, of New Ross. She d. 5 Dec. 1825, aged 45. He d. 24 April, 1852, having had issue, five sons and three daus. His eldest son,

    NICHOLAS WHITNEY, bapt. 13 Mar 1805; m. 21 March, 1833, Mary Gese, dau. of Thomas Jones. She d. 20 March, 1895, aged 85. He d.v.p. and was bur. at Old Ross, 8 March, 1834, having had an only child,

    Arms --- Az., a cross chequy or and sa., in the dexter quarter a cross crosslet arg. Crest A bull's head couped sa. armed sa., and charged on the neck with a cross crosslet az. Motto --- Magnanimiter crecem sustine.

    Residences --- Brayfort House, Bray, co. Wicklow, and 29, Upper Fitzwilliam Street, Dublin. Clubs --- Constitutional, W.D., and Friendly Brothers, Dublin.

FETHERSTON-WHITNEY OF NEW PASS.

    HENRY ERNEST WILLIAM FETHERSTON-WHITNEY, of New Pass, co. Westmeath, J.OP. and D.L., High Sheriff 1887, B.A. Trin. Coll. Dublin,lat Maj. 7th Batt. King's Royal Rifle Corps, formerly Lieut. 60th Rifles, b. 2 Nov 1847; m. 1st 17 Aug 1876, Jeannie, dau. of Edward Atkinson, of Seafield Hall, Donabate. She d.s.p. 14 Nov. 880. He m. 2ndly, 5 AUg. 1885, Alice Marion Caroline, dau. of Co. Robert Caulfield, of Camolin House, co. Wexford (see BURKE's Peerage, CHARLEMONT, V.). Mr. Fetherston-Whitney is the youngest and only surviving son of the Rev. Sir Thomas Francis Fetherston, 4th bart., who d. 28 Aug. 1853, by Anne, his 2nd wife, who d. 20 Nov. 1872, dau. of Edmund L'Estrange, of Hunstanton, Norfolk, and grandson of Sir Thomas Fetherston, 2nd bar., who d. 19 July, 1819, and Elizabeth his wife, dau. of George Boleyn Whitney, of New Pass. Mr. Fetherston-Whitney is uncle and heir presumptive to the Rev. Sir George Ralph Fetherston, 6th bart., and s. his brother, John Henry Fetherston-Whitney, of New Pass, 1881, and thereupon assumed the additional name and arms of WHITNEY by Royal License.

    Lineage. --- See BURKE's Peerage, FETHERSTON, Bart.

    Arms --- Quarterly 1st and 4th, az. a cross chequy or and sa., in the 1st quarter a crescent of the 2nd (WHITNEY); 2nd and 3rd gu. on a chevron between three ostrich feathers arg. a pellet (FETHERSTON). Crest --- 1. (WHITNEY): A bull's head couped sa. horned arg. tipped gu. gorged with 4 collar chequy or and sa. 2. (FETHERSTON): An antelope statant sa. armed or. Motto --- Volens et valens.

    Seat --- New Pass, Rathowen, co. Westmeath. Club --- Junior United Service.
