Andrew Bell to Hugh Monticello Whitney, 16 October 1891.
Kill Creek Kans Oct 16th /91 Friend Hugh It is with sorrow that I write you this letter for I have to tell you that Dear Father Heberlein is no more. he died on the 14th about 2 or 3 P.M. on the road from Alton to Kill Creek Mother & Father had been to Alton his water had been bothering him but he was nearly well every one that saw him thought him unusually cheerfull. when he got about 2 or 3 miles from home he said to mother that he had a queer feeling in his head mother was driving the horse & spring wagon she asked him if he felt bad and he said oh we will be home soon and immediatly after he fell out of the spring wagon dead when Mother got out and called to him he opened his eyes once but said nothing. Mother had to drive 1/4 to 1/2 mile before she could get any one to help her. you can imagine the shock she had to go through & just after having an operation on herself that day we got a dispatch the next day and got up here that night Bertha Reka & me Father was burried yesterday about 3 ocklock There was no regular Preacher to be had in the county but an evangelickel methodist came along who has some property near here and was out looking after it & volunteer ed his services which were gladly excepted He preached the best sermon I ever heard from a methodist he is an elequent preacher Mother has not made up her mind what she will do yet but I think she will stay here for a short time at least untill she gets things straightened out we are going to have a talk with her tomorrow about it I told her that she could come down and visit with us untill she got tired of it but she does not yet know what to do she is holding up [line(s) missing from photocopy) Reka may stay a week hoping you are all well I am as ever your Friend Andrew Bell
