Nathan F. Whitney enlisted as a private in Co. E, 10th Maine Volunteer Infantry in Portland, ME, 4 Oct 1861. He died at the Battle of Cedar Mountain in Virginia of a gunshot wound on 9 Aug 1862, and never married. His father, Joseph Whitney, was married by the Rev. Coan to Harriet Morse in Fryeburg, ME, 9 Apr 1837. She was the daughter of Samuel and Harriet Morse. Harriet (Morse) Whitney died in Lowell, MA, 9 May 1892. The claim of Joseph Whitney was filed from North Berwick, York Co., ME, where he was a resident, 18 Aug 1892. Joseph died 20 Jun 1896, place not stated. There is no mention of other children, but that may not have been required for the application.
