What do we do with the Unknowns when we've completed a year? I suspect many are children without pages and some are immigrants. I've noticed a number of family pages are flagged for sons that need their own family page. Do we create family pages for them and then start searching the immigration records?

Whitney Cemetery

I learned of this cemetery last fall when I found this article online while researching Clark Whitney. The cemetery is located in Watertown, Jefferson Co., WI. Clark's first wife is possibly buried there as well as an aunt and possibly a newphew (non Whitney's). I plan to visit the site this June to do a thorough search. Do we want to list this anywhere in the mean time?

Potential Heads of Households - 1820

Robert,

I have completed my review of the remaining unidentified census entries and idenified additional possible family links. When you have time, would you please review those possibilites I noted and indicate if you Agree or Disagree by adding these words after my note? I will then take the appropriate action of linking the census record or creating a family page. A 3rd option would be Save; in which case we'll leave my note for future reference.

In reviewing the 1820 unidentified individuals, I made some off line notes to myself about potential links to a number of 1810 unidentified census entries. When we complete 1830, I'll develop a spreadsheet to see if I can't further develop ties between the unidentified individuals 1790-1830. I'm also going to review the 1810 unidentifed census entries. Perhaps a fresh set of eyes might find some potential matches.

Also, my e-mail had an error. We had reduced the number of unidentified from 174 to 159, not 169. I found a census record last night in the census extract that only had a 1 way link to a family page and corrected it. We now stand at 158 unidentifed individuals.

As you've noted before, a lot of work remains. The way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time.

Joseph Whitney of Belchertown, MA

Hi Robert, You present a very convincing hypothesis that Joseph is the one in Otsego Co., NY. If his birthdate is Jan 10, 1795, then his Probate Record in Norwich, VT for assigning a guardian (Jan 9, 1813) was executed the day before he turned 18 (is 18 the age of maturity at that time?). Plus he joined the military late Dec, 1812 when he was only 17. I would assume the court papers for guardianship would have been filed prior to his joining the military. Perhaps he needed that to help with his enlistment as a minor?? Hopefully some day soon I can review the actual probate packet in Windsor county to see if there are additional letters or documents concerning his case. I'll dig back through my records for the Whitneys near Sharon - there were several. Also I will see if I have any land records regarding Joseph in Windsor county, VT. I'm not sure if I brought all of those with us to Naples, FL - this sure beats the weather back in Michigan! :) Thanks, Doug Wood

Joshua and Joseph

Robert, I think you are correct on the connections you have made so far - quite intriguing. I compared the 1800 Norwich, VT census records with the 1810 records for William Wade (guardian for Joseph) and his household picked up 3 males beteen 10 and 44 years old in 1810. I think two of them are Joshua (~ 21) and Joseph (~14). Not sure who the third male is. Since Joshua doesnt show up in NY until about 1813 - 1814 , its possible that Joshua was in Norwich with Joseph for a period of time. Is there a record of Joshua enlisting in the 1812 War? Potential Heads of Households - 1850

Robert,

You asked a while back if I thought we should expand the list of unknowns to individual younger than 50. Having now worked with the 1840 data a bit, I think we should lower the age to 40 given the following break down of unidentified individuals by year born for 1840:

• 1770 & before - 4%
• 1770-1780 - 3%
• 1780-1790 - 9%
• 1790-1800 - 23%
• 1800-1810 - 37%
• 1810-1820 - 24%

I think we are excluding a large population of individuals that need to be reviewed in my spreadsheet mapping exercise.

There is still much work to be done on the 1840 data so there is no rush to expand.

I will go through and scrub the remaining 420 unknowns as I have in the past with the earlier lists. Prior to starting that, I have some family pages to update when I return Tuesday from vacation based upon research I have done on some of the individuals buried in Pueblo.

Arthur C. Whitney 1854-1951

Hi Robert, I found this Whitney in Munroe Cemetery in Lexington, MA. His marriage record shows that his parents were John S. Whitney and Lydia [Hoar] Whitney. Her name is very hard to read though. Arthur was born in Boxborough, MA. I can't find Arthur in "Whitneys by given name" so I want to add him to the correct family page, but I can't find John either. Can you help?

1810 NY Census Index

Robert,

In the 1810 census index for New York, there is a Josh Whitney listed for Franklin Co., but no link or extract. Do you know what that is about? I haven't found an 1810 census record for the Joshua Whitney family that I am currently developing.
