Judge Cyrus⁷ Whitney (Eliphalet⁶, Cornelius⁵, Matthias⁴, Cornelius³, Joshua², John¹), son of Eliphalet⁶ and Lucy (Ellsworth) Whitney. was born 19 Feb 1814, Mexico, NY, and died 16 Sep 1890, Oswego, NY.

He married, 26 Sep 1848, Shelburne, VT, and Burlington, VT, Jane E. Brown,^[1] daughter of ----- and Hannah L. (-----) Brown. She was born 15 Aug 1830, Burlington, VT, and died after 1900.

She resided 981 Asylum Ave., Hartford, CT.

Ex-county Judge Cyrus Whitney was one of the oldest lawyers in Oswego county. Judge Whitney was born in the town of Mexico, Oswego county, 19 Feb 1814, and in his youth attended the Mexico academy, an institution famous for the many bright men it has sent out into the world. He wished to become a lawyer, and to gratify that ambition he found it necessary to teach school to supply himself with the necessary funds to continue his studies. He taught school at Pompey, Ouondaga county, and then entered the law office of his cousin, Mr. Orla F. Whitney of Mexico. In 1846 he was admitted to the bar and at once began the practice of his profession in Mexico. He was noted as a great student and his early successes brought to the young lawyer many clients. Shortly after he entered into a partnership with T. W. Skinner, and up to 1870 the law firm of Whitney & Skinner was known as one of the most successful in Oswego county. It was while in Mexico, in 1867, that Judge Whitney was first elected county judge. He succeeded the late Judge Tyle and the term was for four years. In 1871 he was re-elected and served a six-year term. He came to Oswego in 1870, and became the law partner of J. J. Lamoree, and for several years the firm was known as Whitney & Lamoree. After they dissolved Judge Whitney continued the practice of his profession alone until up to about five years ago when he formed a partnership with his son, Mr. C. F. Whitney, and the firm has since been styled Whitney & Whitney. Judge Whitney was married to Miss Jane E. Brown, of Shelburne, VT, who survives her husband. There were three children born to them, all of whom are living; Mr. C. F. Whitney, of that city; Jennie L., wife of Benjamin R. Stillman, of Hartford, CT, and Harry C. Whitney, of Watertown. Through his long life Judge Whitney had been a practical Christian. He was a member of Grace church, and at his death was a trustee and deacon. A few years ago he was prominent in Sunday-school work, in which he took an active interest. In the death of Judge Whitney the bar association of Oswego county has lost one of its oldest and most honored members, and Oswego a good citizen. He resided Mexico and Oswego, NY.

Mr. Stillman is a thorough insurance man and resided at 981 Asylum Av. Children: a. Daisy Gilbert Stillman, b. 30 Sep, 1881. b. Cyrus Whitney Stillman, b. 20 Oct 1884; d. 6 Mar 1894.
