Any information would be appreciated.
- Beverly Hanner
- ANSWER: "I have found proof that Arthur Eugene
WHITNEY is in fact my Great Grandfather. I am sending you a copy of his birth certificate
if for any reason you may need to see it." [It states Arthur Eugene WHITNEY
was son of Adam and Mary Ann (-----) WHITNEY, which suffices to identify him as
Arthur Eugene9 WHITNEY (Adam8, Jonathan7,
Jonathan6, Joseph5, Benjamin4, Joseph3,
John2, John1).--RLW] Bev Hanner

This is established by Middlesex County land records, 72:21 and 73:446.
- WHITNEY, Cyrus P., was the original surveyor of the Adirondack State Park, and
lived in the mid-1800's. Among his relatives or descedants are a Charles WHITNEY
who apparently died in World War I, and Walter WHITNEY of Malone, NY, my
grandfather, who m. Matty IRISH. My father Robert W. WHITNEY, also of
Malone, NY, was born in 1927. Looking for more information about these people.
- Evan T. Whitney
- ANSWER: Robert
Ward supplied the following: Cyrus P. WHITNEY is undoubtedly the one listed as
#4580 in Frederick Clifton Pierce, Descendants of John Whitney, p. 499.
He was b. 12 Feb 1843, Dickenson, NY, son of Peter7 and Laura (FARR)
WHITNEY [Israel6, Jonas5, Jonas4,
Moses3, Richard2, John1]. He m. 3 Sep 1865,
Cynthia L. DAVENPORT, b. 9 May 1838. In 1895 they resided in Malone, NY.
Their children are given as:
- Eva Maria, b. 15 Nov 1866.
- Charles Leonard, b. 5 May 1868.
- Carl Cushing, b. 24 Feb 1873; d. 10 May 1876.
- Floy Fisk, b. 20 Jul 1877.
- On p. 625, Charles Leonard9 WHITNEY is treated. He m. 14 Feb
1893, Mattie E. IRISH. They had a son Gifford Irish WHITNEY, b. 24 Mar
1894.
- WHITNEY, Daniel, m. 3 Jan 1782, Douglas, MA, Eunice MARSH, he
being called "of Chesterfield." The History of Chesterfield [Cheshire Co.,
NH], by Oran E. Randall, (1882) mentions Daniel and Eunice Whitney as having four
children, Adolphus, b. Dec. 13, 1782, d. 1785; George, b. Jan 11, 1785;
Vashni, b. June 3, 1788; and Calvin, b. Aug 23, 1790. It says the name is not
found after 1794. Who were his parents, and when and where was he born?
- Robert Ward
- ANSWER: Robert
Ward supplied the following: Daniel WHITNEY is #1314 in Frederick Clifton
Pierce, Descendants of John Whitney, p. 106. This identification is based on the fact that
his father's family lived in Douglas, MA.
- WHITNEY, Edward, b. ca. 1828, m. Adeline BALCH or
BOCHE, and resided in Hartland, VT. They had son William Melville
WHITNEY, b. 1858, Sandgate or Sunderland, VT, resided in Granville, NY. Who were his
parents?
- Diana Frazer and
Colleen Knights
- ANSWER: Colleen
Knights supplied the following: Edward WHITNEY was a son of Adolphus and
Martha (POWERS) WHITNEY, and grandson of Benjamin and Jerusha (BROCKWAY)
WHITNEY (see above!).
- WHITNEY, Emory, m. Lydia LOCKE. I am looking for descendants.
- Jerry Harrison
- ANSWER: Robert
Ward supplied the following: Emory WHITNEY is #2487 on page 325 of Frederick
Clifton Pierce, Descendants of John Whitney. His son is continued on pages 513-514, and
a grandson on page 628.
- WHITNEY, Ezra Slack. I am trying to locate information on him and his ancestry.
He was b. 1808, married to Lydia DUTCHER. They were parents of Henry Edward
WHITNEY d. 1896, married to Helen Camden LESTER. They were parents of
Louise Hunt (b. Brooklyn, NY), Richard, Josephine, Helen,
and Harold WHITNEY.
- Laurie McL.
- ANSWER: Jon Aston
supplied the following: Ezra Slack WHITNEY is #5458 in Frederick Clifton Pierce,
Descendants of John Whitney, pp. 551-552.
- WHITNEY, George, b. ca. 1796, d. ca. 1888, m. Sarah WOODS, b. ca.
1796, d. ca. 1888. They lived in New York state, and her father was a Union general. Their
children were: Al, Minnie, Sybll, Reance, Tillard,
twin boys Hiriam and and Miriam, and Reuben Henry, b. abt. 1852, d.
1936. Checked Pierce and also the database with no luck (unless I missed something).
- ronwhitney@worldnet.att.net
- ANSWER: Robert
Ward supplied the following: The 1880 Census of Center Township, Monona Co., IA,
shows:
| George WHITNEY | Self | M | M | W |
63 | CT | Farmer | CT | CT |
| Sarah WHITNEY | Wife | M | F | W |
56 | NY | Keeping House | VT | NY |
| George T. WHITNEY | Son | S | M | W |
27 | MI | | NY | CT |
| Rubin H. WHITNEY | Son | S | M | W |
25 | MI | | NY | CT |
| Maron WHITNEY | Dau | S | F | W |
23 | MI | | NY | CT |
| Irena WHITNEY | Dau | S | F | W |
21 | MI | | NY | CT |

| Miney WHITNEY | Dau | S | F | W |
11 | MI | | NY | CT |
| Charley CRISLY | Son | S | M | W |
17 | IA | | IA | IA |
Thus George was born about 1817 in Connecticut. There was a George
W.7 WHITNEY, son of Shubael6 and Sally (MITCHELL)
WHITNEY [Asa5, Joshua4, William3,
Joshua2, John1], born 23 Mar 1816, Groton, CT, who may be this
man. Where they lived in New York is a question.
- WHITNEY, George Harlow8, b. 11 Mar 1805, son of
Benjamin7 and Sibyl (BLAKE) WHITNEY (Eli6,
Nathaniel5, Nathaniel4, Nathaniel3, John2,
John1). Does anyone have information on his children?
- Colleen Knights
- ANSWER: Robert
Ward supplied the following: According to the LDS International Genealogical Index,
George Harlow Whitney died 13 Oct 1884, and married Eveline TYLER (b.
1817, d. 16 Dec 1884). He appears in the 1880 Census in Milford, Hillsborough Co., NH:
| George H. WHITNEY | Self | M | M | W |
75 | MA | Wood Turner | MA | MA |
| Eveline T. WHITNEY | Wife | M | F | W |
63 | NH | Keeping House | MA | NH |
There is record of one child:
- Henrietta E. F. WHITNEY, b. 12 Jun 1845, Grafton, MA, d. 17 Jun 1855.
- WHITNEY, Guilford, m. Anna LOCKE. I am looking for descendants.
- Jerry Harrison
- ANSWER: Robert
Ward supplied the following: Guilford WHITNEY is #1844 on pages 256-257 of
Frederick Clifton Pierce, Descendants of John Whitney. His sons are continued on page
441.
- WHITNEY, Irem, m. Marilla S. -----, and had daughter Melendy
WHITNEY, who married 3 Oct 1857, Two Rivers, Manitowoc Co., WI, Thomas G.
FENTON. They are on the 1860 census with a son Irem born about 1858, in
Brillion, Calumet Co., WI. Melendy died 14 Nov. 1870, where I don't know. After she died
Thomas remarried a Mary Ann DOBSON. I found this out from
Thomas's Civil War records when his second wife applied for pension, 4 July 1893, after
Thomas died in Portland, OR, 21 May 1886. This is all I know of her. I know my
FENTON lived in St. Lawrence Co., NY, before coming to WI. They lived in the town
of Canton in the 1840's. Did Thomas and her go back out there? Did she die there? Her
mother says she was with her daughter at the time of death. What ever happened to their son? I
have not found him any more than on the one census.
- Linda Sue Cox Wildes
- ANSWER: Robert
Ward supplied the following: According to the LDS International Genealogical Index,
Hiram WHITNEY, b. ca. 1809, d. ca. 1869, Madrid, St. Lawrence Co., NY, married on
9 Feb 1831, Madrid, Marilla MILLER, b. 29 Sep 1811, Washington, MA, d. Oct 1896,
daughter of Deodatus and Eunice (CRANE) MILLER. The 1880 Census of Lisbon, St.
Lawrence Co., NY, shows:
| Hiram WHITNEY | Self | M | M | W |
71 | NY | Farmer | VT | VT |
| Marilla WHITNEY | Wife | M | F | W |
68 | MA | Keeping House | MA | MA |
| Laura MCKEE | Dau | W | F | W |
46 | NY | Tayloress | NY | MA |
| Eva M. FENTON | GDau | S | F | W |
9 | WI | | NY | NY |
Thus the above report of his death about 1869 was premature. Also the LDS Pedigree Resource
File lists the following children for them:
- Laura WHITNEY, b. 9 Feb 1834, d. 9 Apr 1899, Morley, NY; m. Joseph
McKEE.
- Malinda WHITNEY, b. 27 Sep 1835; m. 1860, Thomas FENTON.
- Mary Jane WHITNEY, b. 2 Jul 1837, d. 1902; m. 1858, William
FENNIMORE.
- Drayton WHITNEY, b. 27 Sep 1839.
- Isaac H. WHITNEY, b. 3 Jun 1844; m. 23 Nov 1863, Emma HANNA.
- Alvina WHITNEY, b. 27 May 1845, d. 1848.
The LDS International Genealogical Index shows Drayton M. WHITNEY, m. 3 Mar
1863, Brantwood, Price Co., WI, Charlotte CLEVELAND, who is likely the son
mentioned above.
Thomas and Melinda (WHITNEY) FENTON are assigned the following three children in
the LDS Pedigree Resource File: Worthington, Fayette, and Eva. I
found him with his second wife in the 1880 Census of Klickitat Co., Washington:
| Thomas FENTON | Self | M | M | W |
50 | NY | Farmer | MA | CAN |
| Mary A. FENTON | Wife | M | F | W |
37 | CAN | Keeping House | --- | --- |
| Fayette FENTON | Son | | M | W |
17 | WI | At Home | NY | CAN |
In the next household was the son:
| Hiram W. FENTON | Self | S | M | W |
21 | WI | Farmer | NY | CAN |
My guess is that Hiram W. FENTON and Worthington FENTON were one and
the same.
- WHITNEY, J. A., of Leominster, MA. I am searching for information regarding a
baby carriage I used to play with at my grandparents house. I have the carriage and wish to
restore it and would like to find an original picture of it. The tag on the bottom says "J. A.
WHITNEY, Leominster, Mass."
- Wrbunny
- ANSWER: Robert
Ward supplied the following: The name of the company who manufactured baby carriages in
Leominster, MA, was the F. A. Whitney Co. (not J. A.). It was formed by
Francis
Austin Whitney and
Francis
Wolfe Whitney, a pair of cousins. There is a
discussion of the
company, and
pictures of some of its
carriages online, as well as
two pictures of their
plant, dated 1888 and 1923.
- WHITNEY, Jabez, b. ca. 1769, m. Elizabeth -----, b. ca. 1762, resided in
Orange, MA, 1790-1800s. Who were his parents?
- Fern Whiteley
- ANSWER: Robert
Ward supplied the following: Jabez WHITNEY was baptized 20 Dec 1767,
Roxbury, MA, son of Jacob and Rachel (WHITING) WHITNEY.
- WHITNEY, Jabez, b. 22 Mar 1780, ME, d. 1839, m. Abigail Milk
WHEELER, d. 1839, Adams Co., IL. They resided in North Yarmouth, ME. Children:
Joseph I., Lydia, Thankful, Lucinda, Mary,

- Karen Trovat
- ANSWER: Mike
Poston supplied the following: Jabez WHITNEY was son of
Phineas5 and Anna (MORTON) WHITNEY [Isaac4,
Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1]. A discussion of the problem and solution are available
on-line.
- WHITNEY, Joseph, son of Lemuel and Thankful (GRIFFITH)
WHITNEY, b. 1786, VT, d. 1855, Clinton Co., NY, m. Orinda STAFFORD. The
only child I know about is Lemuel Griffith WHITNEY, b. 1812, Vermont, d. 1859,
Clinton Co., NY, m. Catherine CONROW. I am looking for information on other
children of Joseph.
- Virginia Smith
- ANSWER: Robert
Ward supplied the following: Joseph WHITNEY is #1889 in Frederick Clifton
Pierce, Descendants of John Whitney, p. 262.
- WHITNEY, Lucy, "of Canaan", m. 16 Jun 1755, Bolton, CT,
Jonathan DARTE "of Bolton" (b. 10 Jan 1732/3). I have no birthdate for
her or death dates for either of them. Their children were: Timothy, b. 1756, m.
Margaret TAYLOR, 1776; Jonathan, b. 1758, m. Susannah SMITH,
1783; Lucy, b. 1760; Asahel, b. 1762; Levi, b. 1764, m. Eliz.
UTLEY, 1790; Abiel, b. 1766, m. Hoppe FOX, 1795; Aaron, b.
1768, m. Sarah BISSELL; Daniel, b. 1769; Amos, bapt. 1771;
Mabel, bapt. 1773; Joshua, bapt. 1777. I am trying to determine the
identity of the parents/siblings of Lucy (WHITNEY) DARTE. If anyone has connections
here, please let me know.
- Marti Dart
- ANSWER: Robert
Ward supplied the following: I think your Lucy WHITNEY must be the same as
Lucy5 WHITNEY, dau. of Joshua4 and Anne/Anna
(BLODGETT) WHITNEY [William3, Joshua2,
John1], b. 28 Apr 1739, recorded in Preston, CT (Vital Records 2:31) and also in
Tolland, CT (Vital Records 1:134).
- WHITNEY, Lydia, b. 6 Sep 1793, d. after 1880 [U.S. Census], m. James
LOCKE, b. 18 May 1790, Thetford, VT. Lydia and James moved to
Wellsboro, Tioga, PA. James had been a silversmith in VT and became a gunsmith in Wellsboro.
They had Lydia, James Kimball, Harriet, Daniel,
Samuel, Perrin, Merrill, Susan M., Mary E.,
Charles, Nancy and Agnes. Did any of the children survive to
adulthood, marry and have children? Who were her parents? When did she die?
- Jerry Harrison
- ANSWER: Robert
Ward supplied the following: Lydia7 WHITNEY was born in Gilsum,
NH, daughter of Samuel6 and Mary6 (WHITNEY)
WHITNEY [Joseph5, Timothy4, John3,
John2, John1]. She died 25 Jan 1887, Wellsboro, Tioga Co., PA. Of
the children, Lydia Whitney LOCKE married Phineas VAN HORN, Harriet
LOCKE married Sylvester KELLEY, and Daniel LOCKE married
Clarissa WRIGHT. At least Merrill and Mary E. LOCKE lived to
adulthood, too.
- WHITNEY, Mantle or Manville, b. ca. 1863, PA or NY, d. 1941, Port Angeles,
WA, m. ca. 1887, in PA, Mary FULLER. They had: Bert (moved to Iosco Co.,
MI), Irwin (b. 1888, PA, moved to Wayne Co., MI), Lewis (b. 1892, NY),
Norman (b. 1896, NY, moved to TX), and Robert (b. 1901, NY, moved to
Wayne Co., MI). In 1920, the sons were in MI. Looking for his parents.
- Mary
- ANSWER: Becky
Myers supplied the following: I have now obtained a death certificate for Bernice
WHITNEY. It shows his father as John WHITNEY of New York, and his mother,
Emma PAIN of Pennsylvania. Bernice was born in Buffalo, NY Aug 18, 1866
and died in Castle Rock, Cowlitz Co, WA on Jan 13, 1936. Bernice was married to
Lillian Matilda CRANDALL who was born about 1865 in Cherry Creek, NY and died
Sept 11, 1914 in Castle Rock, WA. Bernice also had a sister and a brother listed as
living in his obituary. His sister was May WHITNEY SNOW and his brother, C. M.
WHITNEY of Port Angeles, WA. A cousin said he went by the name of
"Mentle". I do not know if there were other siblings.
Ken Whitney supplied the following: John A.
WHITNEY was a Civil War verteran. His pension application and that of his widow reveal
that he was born 3 Feb 1840 in Howard, Steuben Co., NY, and married firstly in Nov 1861
Emeline "PAGE".
The 1850 Census of Independence, Allegany Co., NY, shows John WHITNEY, age 8, in
the family of his apparent parents, William WHITNEY, age 38, b. NY, and
Clarinda, age 36, b. NY, along with several siblings. Ken Whitney reports her maiden
name as Clarinda DOLLY, but the LDS Ancestral File calls her Clarinda
DAWLEY, daughter of Christopher and Lavina (-----) DAWLEY.
- WHITNEY, Margaret, probably b. ca. 1800, m. ca. 1825, Ebenezer BEAL
of Bowdoinham, ME. He had married firstly, Mary BAKER. Since Ebenezer didn't
seem to travel much, she should have been from the Bowdoinham/Bath area. My hypothesis is
that Ebenezer and Margaret had children, including one Martin E.
BEAL, my gggfather.
My problem is that from the available census records, there is nothing connecting the two
families. Another BEAL researcher is descended from Ebenezer's first wife, Mary
BAKER. They believe also that Ebenezer married Margaret, but they do
not know about children of that marriage. I hope to find eventually either a will or land record
connecting either Ebenezer or Margaret to Martin E.
There are several WHITNEY families in the Lincoln and Penobscot county censuses in this
period. If you don't know Margaret, I would appreciate it if anyone can say that
Margaret was not part of any of those families, and why. I have searched all the
WHITNEY data bases and found a few unexplained female children that I cannot eliminate. If
anyone has information about the following families please contact me:
Ebenezer WHITNEY and Mehitable, Bowdoin, had: Eleazur, 1785;
Robert, 1789; Samuel, 1793; Polly, 1795; Ebenezer, Jr., 1800;
Elizabeth, 1801; Rachel, 1804; David, 1807; Thomas, 1810.
Benjamin WHITNEY and Mary of Bowdoin, had: Ralph, 1797;
Abigail, 1800; Samuel, 1801; Peggy, 1804;
Mary, 1805; Diana, 1807; Stover, 1809. Joseph WHITNEY
and Betty (PHINNEY) of Gorham had: Peggy, 1796. Some of
this information came from: Bowdoin Maine Vital Records to 1892, pub. Maine
Historical Society (1944); and Frederick Clifton Pierce, Descendants of John Whitney, p.
62. Can anyone help determine what happened to the daughters listed?
I am looking for proof of the above and any information that is available on Margaret's
ancestry.
- Martin Roberts
- ANSWER: Robert
Ward supplied the following: It seems extremely likely that Margaret (WHITNEY)
BEAL was identical to Peggy6 WHITNEY, born 9 Feb 1804,
Bowdoin, ME, daughter of Benjamin5 and Mary (VARNUM) WHITNEY
[Benjamin4, John3, Benjamin2, John1], on
geographical grounds alone. Unfortunately, the vital records of Bowdoin and Bowdoinham show
the children of Ebenezer and Margaret (WHITNEY) BEAL to have been:
- Dianna BEAL, b. 11 Sep 1825, Bowdoinham, ME
- Mary Jane BEAL, b. 10 Jun 1832, Bowdoinham, ME
- Almira BEAL, b. 25 Oct 1833, Bowdoinham, ME
- Robert BEAL, b. 16 Dec 1835, Bowdoinham, ME
- Eben BEAL, b. 15 Aug 1837, Bowdoinham, ME
- Susan Jane BEAL, b. 11 May 1841, Bowdoinham, ME
- Elisa Jane G. BEAL, b. 9 Mar 1843, Bowdoinham, ME
Unless Martin E. BEAL was the same as Eben BEAL above, or unless his birth
was not recorded with those of the other children, he must belong to a different family.
- WHITNEY, Mrs. Mary, m. 30 Jan 1741, Dedham, MA, Samuel MILLER.
Was she a widow, and if so, of whom? If not, who were her parents?
- Robert L. Ward
- ANSWER: Robert
Ward supplied the following: The vital records of Dedham, MA, calls her Mary
WHITTING, not WHITNEY.
- WHITNEY, Mary, m. 25 Apr 1771, Lancaster, Worcester, MA, Joseph
WHITAKER. He was born 1 Jan 1746 in Lancaster, the son of Joseph
WHITAKER and Hannah GUILE. They had a son Whitney WHITAKER,
b. 15 Oct 1780, Sterling, MA. He married Eunice RICHARDSON, 27 Mar 1807 and
died in Newfane, VT, 19 Apr 1848. Who were her parents?
- Joanne
- ANSWER: Margaret
Swanson supplied the following: 29 April 1771 Joseph WHITAKER and Mary
WHITNEY were "both of Lancaster" when married in Lancaster by Rev. John
MELLEN. Intentions recorded 17 Jan. 1771. Lancaster VR Book First Marriage p. 134;
Intentions p. 45.
24 Sept. 1782 William WHITNEY deeded 60 acres of land in southerly part of Sterling
and 11 acres in Sterling on Holden town line to Joseph WHITAKER. Consideration
£400. Worcester Deeds Vol. 87:113. FHL microfilm 843,364
3 Oct. 1787 William WHITNEY deeded 2 acres of land lying in Holden bounded
easterly and northerly on land of Joseph WHITAKER and southerly upon the river.
Grantee Joseph WHITAKER. Consideration £1 10s. Recorded 12 March 1788.
Worcester Deeds Vol. 103:448. FHL microfilm 0843,371.
15 Aug. 1792 William WHITNEY deeded 35 acres in easterly part of Holden easterly
bound of parcel on land of Joseph WHITAKER. Land was deeded for "love and
good will to my son Joseph WHITAKER". Worcester Deeds Vol. 115:527. FHL
microfilm 844,340
1811 Joseph WHITAKER died in West Boyleston. Historical Memorandum and
Genealogical Register of the Town of West Boylston, Massachusetts From its Early Settlement to
1858 Benjamin F. Keyes. Worcester: Spy Printing House 1861 FHL 974.43/W4 D2k page 38
[hereafter Keyes]
9 June 1812 Distribution of the estate of Joseph WHITAKER. Widow Mary and
children. Worcester Mass. Probate 1811 Case 65231. FHL microfilm 856, 326
Keyes states p. 38 that William WHITNEY was "one of the early settlers of this
town [West Boylston] and resided on premises situated in the northwest part of the town." .
. [However West Boylston was not established until 1808 so I have a feeling that he may have
died before the town was actually founded-mps]
For William WHITNEY, see above.
- WHITNEY, Mellon, b. 1867, somewhere near Skowhegan, ME, was perhaps son of
Josiah WHITNEY. I would like information on their wives. I wonder if they somehow
go back to the Joel WHITNEY of Durham and later Phillips, ME.
- Nancy Porter
- ANSWER: Robert
Ward supplied the following: According to the Augusta, ME, vital records, Mellen
Augustus WHITNEY was born 30 Sep 1862, Augusta, Kennebec Co., ME, son of Josiah
F. and Mary (MOORE) WHITNEY. According to the LDS International Genealogical
Index, he married Eva Belle JUDKINS on 10 Aug 1892, probably in Solon, Somerset
Co., ME, and died 15 Jan 1934 in Springfield, MA. She was born 5 Nov 1868, Athens, Somerset
Co., ME, and died 30 Sep 1954, Springfield, MA.
Again according to the LDS International Genealogical Index, Josiah Francis WHITNEY
married Mary MOORE on 14 May 1850, in Long Pond, Somerset Co., ME. According
to the LDS Pedigree Resource File, she was daughter of John B. and Sally (HOLDEN)
MOORE, and he was son of Cyrus WHITNEY. Augusta vital records give
Josiah F. WHITNEY's birth date as 23 Mar 1825, but no names of parents, and this was
probably recorded when he was an adult, along with the births of his children. His family appears
in the 1880 Census of Solon, Somerset Co., ME, and his age is given as 55, born in ME, parents
born in ME.
This Cyrus WHITNEY seems certain to be Cyrus6 WHITNEY
[Henry5, Isaac4, Nathaniel3, Benjamin2,
John1], whose wife was Sophia STEARNS.
- WHITNEY, Moses, b. England, d. ME, m. Charlotte CROMWELL.
Children were James, William, Edward, Samuel,
George, Henry L. (b. 6 Apr 1852, Aroostook Co., ME), Annie,
Jane, Lucy, and Emma. Wanted: all data on and and parentage of
Moses.
- John Hrusovszky
- ANSWER: Craig
Whitney supplied the following: I show a Henry B. as 1 of 10 children of Moses
and Charlotte (CROMWELL) WHITNEY. I am descended from this line and have much
information. I show their 10 children as James, Sarah Ann, Charlotte
Jane, William Parker, Edmund, Samuel, Lucinda,
George H., Henry B., and Emma. Moses was b. in Whitney,
NB March 4, 1810 to Samuel WHITNEY and Sarah YOUNG. Samuel
was b. in Sheffield, NB September 18, 1784 to Ebenezer WHITNEY and Huldah
MOOERS. Ebenezer was a pioneer settler of the Mirimichi River region of NB. We
don't know where he came from - most indicators point to New England.
- WHITNEY, Moses, may have been father of three WHITNEY brothers who
married three DOW sisters near Houlton, ME, between 1865 and 1867. Two of the sons were
John and Daniel. All three couples made it to Wisconsin where John
and his brother settled. Daniel moved on to Missouri. John's son
Henry would have been my grandfather. I am seeking to flush out this information and
to link to earlier ancestors in Maine. Any help would be appreciated.
- Allen Whitney
- ANSWER: Robert
Ward supplied the following: Descendants of Ebenezer and Huldah (MOOERS)
WHITNEY have sent us information which seems to identify this family. Moses
WHITNEY, son of Moses and Esther (SHERWOOD) WHITNEY and grandson of
Ebenezer and Huldah (MOOERS) WHITNEY, was born Jan 1812 in Derby,
Northumberland Co., NB. He married in 1838, in Hodgdon, ME, Hannah E.
OUTHOUSE. In 1870 they lived in Waupaca, WI. Their children were Daniel (m.
Julia DOW), John T. (m. Lydia DOW), Phoebe A. (m.
Andrew DOW), Permelia (m. Thomas W. NEWMAN), and
Edward B. WHITNEY, all born in Maine. The ancestry of Ebenezer
WHITNEY is a long-standing problem which is still unsolved.

Nathan and Tabitha in Conway.
- WHITNEY, Nathan, b. ca. 1813, ME, moved to Illinois as a young man. Census

- Ty Alexander
- ANSWER: Robert
Ward supplied the following: He was son of Peter6 and Mary (LAMONT)
WHITNEY [John5, Eliakim4, Nathan3,

- WHITNEY, Newman Abijah John, b. 9 Feb 1875, Kandiyohi County, MN, was my
maternal grandfather. He married Eleanor Nell DAUGHERTY who was born 15 Mar
1875 also in Kandiyohi. Any info would be appreciated.
- Richard W. McEachin
- ANSWER: Robert
Ward supplied the following: Newman WHITNEY appears as a child of 5, born in
Minnesota, in the 1880 Census of Green Lake, Kandiyohi Co., MN, as a son in the family of
Luther WHITNEY, age 34, born in Canada, parents born in Canada, and wife Alice
(-----), age 29, born in Maine, parents born in Maine. According to the LDS International

According to the LDS Pedigree Resource File, Luther WHITNEY was born in Dec 1846

- WHITNEY, Orson, b. perhaps 1860s, presumably Greenfield Township, Erie
County, PA, d. unknown, m. Elsie GRAHAM. Known child: Arthur
WHITNEY, b. Feb 1892, Greenfield Township, Erie County, PA d. May 1964. World

- ANSWER: Fred F. Whitney, Whitney Genealogy: The
Descendants of John Whitney who came from Whitney-on-the-Wye, England, to Pepperell,
Mass., to Tunbridge, Vermont. Twelve Generations, 1553-1977 (Rutland, VT: The author,
1977), page 15, shows:
ORSON8 WHITNEY (Aaron P.7, Aaron6,
Benjamin5, Joseph4, Joseph3, Jonathan2,
John1), b. Jan. 4, 1843, No. Tunbridge; d. July 24, 1915; m. (1st) Nov. 8, 1869,
Corinth, Emily M. Hanson, b. Feb. 22, 1843, d. Jan. 14, 1875; m. (2nd) Feb. 1, 1876 at
So. Royalton, Laura F. Jones, b. May 13, 1851, d. Sept. 11, 1929. Child:
- Warren S.9, b. Feb. 19, 1877; d. Sept. 19, 1906.
Thus that Orson WHITNEY is a different person, and is eliminated.
Orson and Elsie WHITNEY appear in the 1880 Census, Greenfield Twp., Erie Co., PA.
He is age 34, she 29, both born in PA, no parent birthplaces listed. With them is son
Walter, age 9, born in PA, parents born in PA. It seems possible that he was the same
Orson WHITNEY, born 1846, son of Amasa and Isabella (COURTRIGHT)
WHITNEY, born in Bingham Twp., Potter Co., PA, and possibly grandson of Ephraim
WHITNEY of Sherburne, Chenango Co., NY.

Horace EATON, b. 1832. in Royalton, VT, d. 1913, m. 1859, Rebecca Phillips

- Annabel Bixby
- ANSWER: Frederick Clifton Pierce, Descendants of John

mom. My husband hasn't seen his dad since he was around 14 y/o. My husbands name is

family line since we know so little about it.

- ANSWER: Robert
Ward supplied the following: The 1880 Census of Camden, Lorain Co., OH, shows:
| William K. WHITNEY | Self | M | M | W |
30 | OHIO | Farmer | NY | NY |

| Clayton G. WHITNEY | Son | S | M | W |
4 | OHIO | | OHIO | OHIO |
| Calvin WHITNEY | Father | W | M | W |

The LDS International Genealogical Index says her maiden name was WHITING, not
WHITNEY. His father Calvin WHITNEY is son of John R. and Catherine
(SCHOONOVER) WHITNEY. That makes his ancestry William K.9
WHITNEY [Calvin8, John R.7, William6,
Thomas5, William4, William3, Joshua2,
John1].
