pp. 11-18: We pass over the material about the alleged ancestry of John1 WHITNEY, which is discussed elsewhere.
p. 20, ¶ 1: The record of the death of Elinor (-----) WHITNEY in the Watertown vital records does not state her age. The source of this item is unknown, but may be the Watertown church records.
p. 21, ¶ -1: The record of the death of Elinor (-----) WHITNEY in the Watertown vital records does not state her age. The source of this item is unknown, but may be the Watertown church records. The date of the second marriage of John1 WHITNEY to Judah CLEMENT should be 29 Sep 1659, not 29 Sep 1769.
p. 22, #8: I have seen no credible evidence that Joshua2 WHITNEY had a wife named Lydia. Possibly this is a confusion with Jonathan2 WHITNEY, who did have a wife Lydia (JONES). Furthermore, his birth date is 15 July 1635, not 5 July 1635, according to Watertown vital records.
p. 22, #9: Watertown vital records do not show the birth of Caleb2 WHITNEY, only his burial.
p. 22, #3, ¶ 2, line 1: The age of freemen was
not included in the record of their admittance.
p. 22, #14:
Watertown vital records give Samuel's birth
date as 28 July, not 26 July 1648.
p. 23, #15: Mary3 WHITNEY was
born 23 Apr 1650, not 29 Apr 1650.
p. 23, #17: Sarah3 (WHITNEY)
HARRINGTON died 8 Jul 1720, not 8 June 1720, according to
Watertown vital records.
p. 23, #18: Son Jonas WARREN is so recorded in
the birth record (Watertown vital records, volume 2, pages 7 & 9), but this is probably an
error for Josiah WARREN, according to Bond's Watertown, volume 2, page 960. Son
Daniel WARREN did not marry firstly, 24 May 1711, Watertown, MA, Hannah
BIGELOW, and secondly, 15 Nov 1717, Watertown, Mehitable GARFIELD. That was his first
cousin Daniel WARREN, son of John and Mary (BROWN) WARREN, baptized 1 Sep 1689,
Watertown. Instead he married firstly, 26 Feb 1712, Watertown, Rebecca GARFIELD, and
secondly, 22 Aug 1727, Westborough, MA, Mary WETHERBY. Bond's Watertown,
volume 1, pages 620-621, 960-961, also has these two cousins confused.
p. 23, #20: This Benjamin3
WHITNEY did not have a wife Elizabeth -----. She belongs instead to his nephew,
Benjamin4 WHITNEY [Joseph3, John2,
John1], #92 on page 44. His birthdate is given
as 28 Nov 1660, not 28 June 1660, in
Watertown vital records, volume 1, page
23.
p. 23, #4: Richard2 WHITNEY was
baptized 6 Jan 1623/4, Isleworth-on-Thames, Middlesex, England, so he could not have been
born in 1626. Bond gives the date of his release
from training as 7 Apr 1691, not 7 Apr 1697, and which might be correct I cannot now say.
p. 23, #25: Rebecca3 WHITNEY d.
10 Feb 1659[/1660], according to
Watertown vital records, volume 1, page
22.
p. 23, #28: I can find no further record of any Elisha
WHITNEY who could be this person, either in Connecticut or elsewhere.
p. 23, #5: Thomas2 WHITNEY was
baptized 10 Dec 1627, St. Mary Aldermary, London, England, so he could not have been born in
1629. Mary KEDALL's name is spelled thus in her marriage record. I have no authority for the
KETTLE spelling, which must be a guess by Pierce. The John KETTLE who had a land
grant in 1642 may or may not be a relative of Mary KEDALL. It seems to have been his son
Thomas3 WHITNEY who lived in Stow, not Thomas2.
p. 23, #30: John3 WHITNEY was
born 19 May 1659, and died the same day, according to
Watertown vital records, volume 1, pages
21-22.
p. 23, #32 &
#33: "Elieasor & Elnathan" were born
"7 2mo 1662", which means 7 Apr 1662, not 2 Sep 1662.
p. 23, #35: "Bezaliell" was born
"16 7mo 1664", which means 16 Sep 1664.
p. 23, #36: This Sarah3 WHITNEY
did not marry Charles CHADWICK. Instead, it was her cousin Sarah4 WHITNEY
[Nathaniel3, John2, John1],
#79 on page 28, who married Charles CHADWICK. The
rest of the data is correct, but pertains to #79. Of this person #36 nothing further is known.
p. 24, #7: Jonathan2 WHITNEY died 1
Jan 1702/3, according to Sherborn vital
records. His will was dated 21 Dec 1702, according to Middlesex County, MA, Probate
Records, File #24690.
p. 24, #40: Lydia3 WHITNEY married
Moses ADAMS 15 Apr 1684, according to
Sherborn vital records. Child Benoni
ADAMS was son of Moses ADAMS by his first wife, Mary FAIRBANKS, not Lydia
WHITNEY's child. Child Elizabeth ADAMS married Daniel RIDER, not David RIDER.
p. 24, #41: Jonathan3 WHITNEY was
born 20 Oct 1659, according to Watertown vital
records, volume 1, page 21.
p. 24, #42: Anna3 WHITNEY was
born 28 Apr 1660, not 1860, according to
Watertown vital records, volume 1, page
22.
p. 24, #44: Josiah3 WHITNEY was
born 19 May 1663, not 1664, according to
Watertown vital records, volume 1, page 26.
He married first Mary -----, and second Abigail MARTIN.
p. 24, #48: Joseph3 WHITNEY
married Rebecca BURGE, not BARGE.
p. 24, #50: Mercy TRAVIS was not born 8 Feb
1668. It was her sister Elizabeth who was. Mercy's birth was apparently not recorded, but may
have occurred about 1680.
p. 24, #8: Joshua2 WHITNEY was born
15 Jul 1635 not 5 Jul 1635, according to
Watertown vital records, volume 1, page 4.
His alleged wife Lydia ----- is probably an error for his brother Jonathan2's wife
Lydia (JONES) WHITNEY, since there is no credible evidence of such a wife. For more detail,
see a discussion of the wives and children of
Joshua2 WHITNEY. In 1691/92, King Phillip's War had been over for 15 years.
On 17 Mar 1691/2, Joshua2 WHITNEY and his son Joshua3, Jr., were
members of the garrison in the West Regiment of Middlesex.
p. 25, #51: Joshua3 WHITNEY was
born 14 Jun 1665, according to Groton vital
records. His second wife was widow Sarah (-----) FELLOWS.
p. 25, #52: This Sarah3 WHITNEY
apparently died young, and it was a younger half-sister Sarah3 WHITNEY, born
about 1686, who married Nathaniel JEWELL. This is rendered extremely likely by the terms of
the will of her father. For more detail, see a
discussion of the wives and children of Joshua2 WHITNEY.
p. 25, #55: There is no proof that the maiden name
of Sarah, wife of Cornelius3 WHITNEY, was SHEPHERD, and there seems not to
be a Sarah SHEPHERD available to be his wife in any of the families of that surname in New
England. He also had a second wife, Zerviah (CHURCH) CLEVELAND.
p. 25, #58: Abigail (FARNSWORTH) BLOOD did
not die 7 Nov 1783. It was Abigail, widow of John FARNSWORTH, Jr., who died on that date,
according to Pepperell vital records. Instead, Abigail, widow of Dea. David BLOOD, died on 17
Jan 1802, Pepperell, MA, aged 84 years, also according to Pepperell vital
records.
p. 25, #58: The will of her brother
Joshua3 WHITNEY was dated 1753, not 1733, so the death of Ebenezer
FARNSWORTH and her alleged marriage to ----- HARMON must have occurred before that
later date. On the other hand, the Elizabeth HARMON mentioned in his will is not specifically
called his sister, so she might have been some other person, and the deduction about Ebenezer
FARNSWORTH's death date may be wrong.
p. 25, #59: Son Joshua HUTCHINS married Sarah
SHED, not Mary SHED.
p. 25, #60: Alice, wife of Nathaniel WOODS, was
very likely not a daughter of Joshua2 WHITNEY. For more detail, see
a discussion of the wives and children of
Joshua2 WHITNEY. According to
Groton vital records, Nathaniel WOODS was
born 25 Mar 1667/8, not 27 Mar 1667/8. According to
Woods, Henry Ernest, "The Woods Family of
Groton, Mass.," NEHGR, volume LXIV (1910), page 35, Alice WOODS died
10 Jan 1717/8, Groton, MA, in her 45th year, and so was born in 1673.
p. 26, #60: See the above cited article for the wives
and children of Nathaniel WOODS.
p. 26, #62: There are several inaccuracies in the
discussion of the children of Samuel and Eleanor3 (WHITNEY) SHEPHERD and
their descendants.
p. 26, #10: The marriage of Benjamin2
WHITNEY and Mary POOR occurred on 13 Apr 1696, in Marlborough, MA, according to both
Marlborough and
Framingham vital records.
p. 27, #10: The will of his nephew,
Benjamin3 WHITNEY [Jonathan2, John1], was dated 4
Feb 1713/4, not 1718. He died 26 Mar 1723, according to
Sherborn vital records. There was one proven
additional child:
p. 27, #65: John3 WHITNEY married
secondly Susannah (BARTON) SMITH.
p. 27, #67: Jonathan3 WHITNEY
married Susannah FAIRBANKS (not Susannah WHITNEY), according to
Medfield vital records.
p. 27, #11: The marriage date of 4 Mar 1669 has
been seen, but no source for it has yet been found. Certainly it is not found in any vital records.
"Elizabeth Whitney owned covenant at Roxbury chh. 30. 2. 1671," which means 30
Apr 1671, not 30 Mar 1671, according to Harris,
Dr. L. M., "A Branch of the Whitney Family," NEHGR, volume XII (1858),
page 215. John Whitney was admitted freeman on 7 May 1684.
p. 28, #72: Daniel4 WHITNEY was
born 5 Dec 1681, not 3 Dec 1681, according to
Roxbury vital records, but he was baptized on
the 4th at the Roxbury church.
p. 28, #75: Ruth4 WHITNEY was
born 31 Aug 1674, and baptized 6 Sep 1674, according to
Roxbury vital and church records.
p. 28, #76: Sarah4 WHITNEY was
born 7 Aug 1684, and baptized 10 Aug 1684, according to
Roxbury vital and church records.
p. 28, #77: John4 WHITNEY did not
die young. Instead, he died in 1690 while serving in a company under Capt. Andrew Gardner,
part of Sir William Phipps's expedition to Canada, according to
Jones, Theodore F., "Roster of the Expedition
of 1690 to Canada," NEHGR, volume XCIX (1945), pages 307-314. His
brother Timothy4 WHITNEY was heir to his rights to land in "Gardner's
Canada" grant (later renamed Warwick, MA) in compensation for this service.
p. 28, #13: Sarah HAGAR, first wife of
Nathaniel3 WHITNEY, died 29 Jul 1722, Weston, MA, according to
Weston vital records. He then married
secondly, 2 Nov 1724, Concord, MA (according to
Brigham, Clarence S., "Concord (Mass.)
Marriages, 1724," The American Genealogist, volume 16, page 23), Sarah
GOBLE. She was widow Sarah (SHEPARD) GOBLE, born about 1658, daughter of John and
Sarah (GOBLE) SHEPARD, and widow of Thomas GOBLE. It was his second wife (and
widow) Sarah who died 7 May 1746, Weston, MA, aged 88 years, not his first.
p. 28, #78: Nathaniel4 WHITNEY was
born 25 Mar 1675, not 5 Mar 1675, according to
Watertown vital records, volume 1, page
39.
p. 28, #79: Sarah4 WHITNEY was
born 13 Feb 1678, not 12 Feb 1678, according to
Watertown vital records, volume 1, page 45.
Jonathan BALL did not marry this Sarah WHITNEY, but her cousin Sarah4
WHITNEY [Eleazer3, Thomas2, John1],
#128 on page 31. The rest of the data on the BALL family
is correct, but incomplete. Instead, this Sarah4 WHITNEY, #79, married Charles
CHADWICK, listed under #36 on page 23. She was not a
widow at the time of this marriage.
p. 28, #82: Hannah4 WHITNEY
married, 11 Oct 1708, Marlborough, MA, Nathaniel BILLING of Concord, MA, according to
Marlborough vital records. They had
three children born in Concord.
p. 28, #83: Neither Elizabeth4
WHITNEY, nor any heirs, is mentioned in the settlement of her father's estate, 15 Jan 1734/5. On
the other hand, on 13 Jan 1734, the heirs of Nathaniel3 WHITNEY appeared before
the commission to settle his estate, and "Mr. Joseph HARRINGTON (who married
-----)" petitioned for an adjustment. All the other children or their heirs are accounted for,
so it might be inferred that Elizabeth4 WHITNEY may have briefly married him, but
died, leaving no heirs surviving on that date. All this is according to Middlesex County Probate
Records, File #24731.
p. 28, #85: Mercy GREAVES was named as one of
the heirs of Nathaniel3 WHITNEY on 15 Jan 1734/5. This is the evidence for the
existence of a daughter Mercy who allegedly married a certain ----- GREAVES. A search of the
GRAVES families of New England does not reveal any likely candidate for such a wife Mercy
(-----) GRAVES, born say 1696. It could, instead, be inferred that Mercy GREAVES was a
granddaughter, either single or married.
p. 29, #14: Samuel3 WHITNEY was
born 28 Jul 1648, not 23 Jul 1648, according to
Watertown vital records, volume 1, page 13.
Mary BEMIS was born 10 Nov 1644, not 10 Sep 1644, Watertown, MA (vol. 1, page 11).
p. 29, #86, children v and vi: The last two children
were those of John FISKE by his second wife Elizabeth CHINERY, and not by
Mary4 WHITNEY.
p. 29, #16: Adminstration on his estate was granted
to widow Martha on 30 Nov 1702, not 13 Nov 1702, according to Middlesex County Probate
Records, File #24695.
p. 29, #89: John4 WHITNEY married
Sarah CUTTING and Beriah (BEMIS) (CHILD) PIERCE. Beriah did not marry his cousin
John4 WHITNEY [Benjamin3, John2,
John1], #98 on page 44.
p. 29, #91: Isaac4 WHITNEY was
born 26 Feb 1682, not 4 Feb 1682, according to
Watertown vital records, volume 1, page
52.
p. 29, #92: Benjamin4 WHITNEY was
born 31 Jan 1684/5, not 30 Jan 1684, according to
Watertown vital records, volume 1, page
56.
p. 29, #93: I have seen no evidence that either John
KNAPP, Jr., or Mary4 (WHITNEY) KNAPP died in 1730. The list of their children
is incomplete.
p. 29, #16: There was an additional child not
mentioned by Pierce:
p. 29, #20: Benjamin3 WHITNEY was
born 28 Nov 1660, not 28 Jun 1660, according to
Watertown vital records, volume 1, page 23.
He had only one wife, Abigail HAGAR. The alleged second wife Elizabeth ----- actually was
Elizabeth FISKE, wife of his nephew Benjamin4 WHITNEY [Joseph3,
John2, John1], #92 on page 44.
The death date of 1736 also belongs to #92, and the actual death date of #20 is unknown.
p. 29, #95: Abigail4 WHITNEY was
born 3 May 1688, not 3 Mar 1688, according to
Watertown vital records, volume 1, page 60.
The list of her children is incomplete.
p. 29, #96: Benjamin4 WHITNEY did
not marry Rebecca -----, but instead died 13 Nov 1713, Watertown, MA, unmarried. It was a
cousin Benjamin5 WHITNEY [Benjamin4, Joseph3,
John2, John1], #292 on page
73 who married Rebecca -----. There is
a discussion of this matter
available.
p. 29, #97, child ii: Ruth BOND married Samuel
RANDALL, not KENDALL, according to Bolton,
MA, vital records.
p. 29, #98: John4 WHITNEY married
only one wife, Susan -----. Bethia CUTTER married instead John5 WHITNEY
[John4, Joseph3, John2, John1],
#288 on page 44, and Beriah (BEMIS) (CHILD) PIERCE
married instead John4 WHITNEY [Joseph3, John2,
John1], #89 on page 44.
p. 29, #22: Moses3 WHITNEY was
born in Watertown, not Concord, according to
Watertown vital records, volume 1, page
17.
p. 30, #102: If his age at death is accurate,
Moses4 WHITNEY was born 15 Jun 1689, not in 1690. He had three wives: Lydia
TAYLOR, Elizabeth -----, and widow Sarah (SHED) HUTCHINS. Sarah GEARY married his
grandson Moses6 WHITNEY [Ephraim5, Moses4,
Moses3, Richard2, John1],
#943 on page 80.
p. 30, #103: The second wife of
Abraham4 WHITNEY was widow Elizabeth (FARLEY) SHED.
p. 30, #106: Lemuel4 WHITNEY
was born 1 Aug 1706, not 1 Aug 1714, if his age at death is accurate.
p. 30, #107: There is no proof of the existence of a
son John WHITNEY in this family. It seems more likely that the John WHITNEY who married
Rebecca WHITNEY was John4 WHITNEY [Isaiah3,
Thomas2, John1], #139 on page
32, and that Rebecca his wife was a daughter of Moses3 WHITNEY. Absolute
proof of these identifications has not yet been found, however.
p. 30, #26: The will of Richard3
WHITNEY was dated 2 Dec 1723, not 22 Dec 1723, according to Middlesex County Probate
Records, File #24735. His death date on his gravestone is 5 Dec 1723, not 15 Dec 1723.
p. 30, #109: If his age at death is accurate,
Richard4 WHITNEY was born 9 Dec 1692. His second wife was Hannah
(EVELETH) AYERS.
p. 30, #111: Joshua4 WHITNEY had
four wives in all: Zerviah -----, Azubah (BURT) FARNSWORTH, Rebecca (WINSHIP)
WHITNEY, and Mary -----.
p. 30, #114: Sarah4 WHITNEY and
Hezekiah HAPGOOD published their intentions of marriage on 28 Mar 1724, according to
Stow vital records. Their son Ephraim
HAPGOOD was born 21 Apr 1725, Stow. The marriage of Col. Jonathan HAPGOOD, Esq., to
Mrs. Sarah WHITNEY is recorded as occurring on 5 Oct 1784, Stow, not 1785, according to
Stow vital records. Her identity is still not
known.
p. 30, #115: Ruhamah4 WHITNEY
and Josiah WHETCOMB published their intentions of marriage 20 Mar 1726, Stow, MA. They
had seven children recorded in Lancaster and Bolton, MA.
p. 30, #28: Ebenezer3 WHITNEY was
born in Watertown, not Concord, according to
Watertown vital records, volume 1, page 35.
There were four additional children, as revealed in a deed dated 18 Nov 1728, Pomfret, CT, in
which Ezekiel4 WHITNEY quitclaimed his rights to his brothers and sisters. For
details, see Sandiford, Edward Raymond, Some
More Descendants of John and Elinor Whitney (Bloomfield, NJ: The author, 1941).
Those four were:
p. 30, #118: Ezekiel4 WHITNEY
married secondly Sarah PARKE, not Sarah FARRAH.
p. 30, #29: Elizabeth LAWRENCE was born 30 Jan
1659, not 30 Feb 1659 (which date never existed).
p. 31, #123: Mary4 WHITNEY
married Jonathan CROUCH on 1 Jul 1715, Concord, MA. They had four children recorded in
Stow and Lancaster, MA.
p. 31, #125: The given birth date of
Nathan4 WHITNEY cannot be found in any vital record. The day and month are
those of his marriage to Mary HOLMAN, which is suspicious.
p. 31, #126: Susanna4 WHITNEY
married Robert FOSKITT, 1 Mar 1715, Charlestown, MA. They had four children recorded in
Lexington, MA.
p. 31, #32: Eleazer3 WHITNEY died
22 Jun 1731, Watertown, MA, according to
Watertown vital records, volume 2, page
92.
p. 31, #128: Sarah4 WHITNEY was,
indeed, the one who married Jonathan BALL, as listed under #79
on page 28. The BALL data there is correct, but incomplete.
p. 31, #129: Eleazer4 WHITNEY
died -- Feb 1697/8 according to Lexington vital
records.
p. 31, #130: James4 WHITNEY was
born 20 Nov 1697, according to Watertown vital
records, volume 2, page 10. No record of his death is found in vital records.
Bond's Watertown, volume 1, page
645, says that he died 12 Feb 1697/8, Watertown. That may be so. If not, it seems possible
that it was he who was baptized 28 Jan 1699/1700, and that Pierce has thus created from a single
person three sons of this name, #130,
#132, and #137!
p. 31, #131: Thomas4 WHITNEY
was born about 1694, if his age at death is accurate. Apparently he had a second wife, Susanna
-----.
p. 31, #132: This James4 WHITNEY
was the one who married Mercy FLAGG, listed under #137 on
page 53.
p. 31, #133: Mary4 WHITNEY was
born 30 Aug 1692 according to Concord vital
records, not 20 Nov 1697. She was baptized along with Thomas and James on 28 Jan
1699/1700, according to Bond's
Watertown, volume 1, page 645.
p. 31, #137: This James4 WHITNEY
was the same as #132, and possibly also the same as
#130, both on page 31. It was his brother
Jonas4 WHITNEY, #138, who was baptized 1
Jun 1708, according to Bond's Watertown,
vol. 1, page 645.
p. 31, #138: Jonas4 WHITNEY was
baptized 1 Jun 1708, Watertown, not 14 Jul 1723. On the latter date, he owned the covenant.
p. 31, #38: Sarah (WOODWARD) EDDY was
widow of John EDDY, not Jonathan EDDY. He was born 13 Feb 1636/7, not 16 Feb 1636. See
Bond's Watertown, volume 1, pages 203
and 658. Isaiah3 WHITNEY died 1 Jan 1711/2, according to
Cambridge vital records.
p. 32, #139 &
#141: These are the same John4
WHITNEY, and he is the one who married Rebecca4 WHITNEY and is listed as
#107 on pages 47-48. He was the second child.
p. 32, #140: Isaiah4 WHITNEY was
the third child.
p. 32, #142: I have not seen any evidence of the
existence of this child, but if he existed, his birth can be guessed to be about 1702, filling a gap in
this family. That would make him the fourth child.
p. 32, #143: Elijah4 WHITNEY was
the sixth child. He married firstly Mercy HEALD, and then Rebecca WINSHIP.
p. 32, #144: Sarah4 WHITNEY was
born 9 Apr 1705, and baptized 22 Apr 1705, not 22 Jul 1703, according to
Lexington vital records, and thus was the fifth
child. Andrew PARKER was born 14 Feb 1693, not 4 Feb 1693. For an account of their
children, see Parker, Theodore, John Parker of Lexington & Descendants from Deacon
Thomas Parker of Reading, MA, 1635-1893 (n.p.: Charles Hamilton Press, 1893), page
41.
p. 32, #145: Jonas4 WHITNEY was
the eighth child. I have found no further record of him, and believe that he died young.
p. 32, #146: Abraham4 WHITNEY
was the seventh child.
p. 32, #147: Mary4 WHITNEY was
the first child.
p. 33, #41: Jonathan3 WHITNEY was
born 20 Oct 1659, according to Watertown vital
records, volume 1, page 21. The statement about the birthplaces of his children is wrong,
since Sarah, Isaac, and Tabitha were born in Sherborn, then Shadrach, Jonathan, Anna,
and Amos were born in Watertown, then Zaccheus in Sudbury, and finally Timothy and Daniel in
Concord. His will was proved 28 Mar 1735, not 18 Mar 1735, according to Middlesex County
Probate Records, File #24691. He died 17 Mar 1735, according to
Concord vital records. Also, the order of the
children given on pages 33 and 34 is confused.
p. 33, #148: There was no son Jonathan born on
that date. Instead, that birthdate applies to Isaac4 WHITNEY,
#156 on page 34, according to
Sherborn vital records.
p. 33, #149: Anna WARREN married Elisha COX
of Weston. Sabinet WARREN should be Submit WARREN.
p. 33, #150: Her son Francis FULHAM, Jr.,
married Susannah HAMMOND, 4 Dec 1740, Newton, MA. Her second husband George
PARKHURST was born 17 Jan 1685/6, not 16 June 1685, Watertown, MA, according to
Bond's Watertown, volume 1, page
389. Her daughter Tabitha PARKHURST was born 10 May 1734, Watertown, MA. Her
daughter Mary HUNT married Benjamin BARNARD on 22 Feb 1759, Harvard, MA.
p. 33, #155: Anne4 WHITNEY was
born 24 May 1702, according to Watertown vital
records, volume 2, page 22.
p. 34, #156: Isaac4 WHITNEY was
born 27 Sep 1694, according to Sherborn vital
records, which makes him the second child.
p. 34, #158: Daniel4 WHITNEY was
born 12 Sep 1710, according to Concord vital
records.
p. 34, #43: Martha (HOW) WALKER was born 9
Oct 1669, Sudbury, MA, daughter of Samuel and Martha (BENT) HOW, and widow of Thomas
WALKER. Administration on John3 WHITNEY's estate was granted 27 Feb 1731
to his son James4 WHITNEY, so he must have died before that date, probably soon
before it, and not in 1735.
p. 34, #159: Daniel MOORE was born 13 Apr
1687, Sudbury, MA, son of Jacob and Elizabeth (LOKER) MOORE, according to
Sudbury vital records.
p. 34, #160: James4 WHITNEY was
the third child, not the second.
p. 34, #161: Elizabeth4 WHITNEY
was the second child, not the third. She was born 29 Jan 1690, according to
Sherborn vital records. Daniel WILLARD
was born 18 Jun 1718, Roxbury, MA. Jonathan and John WILLARD, twins, were born 26 Oct
1720, Roxbury, MA. Benjamin WILLARD was baptized 5 Jan 1724/5, Cambridge, MA. Since
Elizabeth4 (WHITNEY) WILLARD had children through 5 Jan 1724/5, she could
not have died 4 Jul 1720 in Worcester. Most likely this date should read 4 Jul 1728. Jonathan
WILLARD remarried 23 Jan 1728/9, Cambridge, MA, Mary COOK.
p. 34, #162: Richard HAVEN was born 28 Jan
1692/3, Lynn, MA.

Sherborn vital records. He married Hannah
-----, and had nine children born in Dunbstable, MA.
p. 35, #171: James4 WHITNEY was
the fifth child. He was born 23 Mar 1714, according to
Sherborn vital records. He married Eleanor
ROBBINS, according to Eleanor Robbins Sprague
and Andrew West Robbins, "Untangling The Evidence For Two Early Massachusetts
Robbins Families George of Chelmsford (1657) and Robert of Concord (1671)," New
England Historical and Genealogical Register, volume CLI (1997), pages 398-399.
p. 35, #172: Ephraim4 WHITNEY
was the sixth child. He was born 11 Mar 1715/6, according to
Sherborn vital records. He married Esther
WOODS and had five children born in Pepperell, MA.
p. 35, #173: Abigail4 WHITNEY
was the first child. She and Thomas HERWOOD published their intentions of marriage 4 Jan
1729, according to Chelmsford vital
records. I have not found any records of children born to this couple.
p. 35, #48: There were three additional children not
given by Pierce. They were:
p. 35, #51: Joshua3 WHITNEY was
born 14 Jun 1665, according to Groton vital
records. His second wife was Sarah (-----) FELLOWS, probably the second wife and widow
of John FELLOWS. His military service was not in King Phillip's War, which occurred in 1675-6,
but as a member of the garrison in the West Regiment of Middlesex, 17 Mar 1691/2.
p. 35, #54: William3 WHITNEY was
born in Watertown, not Groton, according to
Watertown vital records, volume 1, page 43.
His marriage to Lydia PERHAM occurred on 16 Mar 1699/1700, according to

Chelmsford vital records. Lydia died either
20 Jan 1716 (town record) or 22 Aug 1716 (gravestone), according to
Groton vital records. Margaret MIRICK was
born in 1684, according to Newton vital records.
p. 36, #54: William3 Whitney died 4 May
1754, Lebanon, Conn., in the 77th year of his age.
p. 36, #175: The later history of
Lydia4 WHITNEY is not known. One Lydia WHITNEY married Samuel TAYLOR
of Templeton, 9 Apr 1741, Littleton, MA, according to
Littleton vital records. This bride was
Lydia5 WHITNEY [Moses4, Moses3,
Richard2, John1], #340 on page
46, as is proved by the will of her father Moses4 WHITNEY of Littleton, which
mentions his daughter Lydia TAYLOR (Middlesex County Probate Records, File #24722).
p. 36, #176: Joshua4 WHITNEY
married Anna BLODGETT, not Amy. It was his first cousin Joshua4 WHITNEY
[David3, Joshua2, John1],
#189 on page 59, who married Amy BLODGETT. This
remarkable conjunction of similar names is a source of much confusion.
p. 36, #177: John4 WHITNEY
married Elizabeth ADAMS.
p. 36, #179: Caleb4 WHITNEY
married Margaret TRACY.
p. 36, #55: There is no proof that the maiden name
of Sarah, wife of Cornelius3 WHITNEY, was SHEPHERD, and there seems not to
be a Sarah SHEPHERD available to be his wife in any of the families of that surname in New
England. Cornelius3 WHITNEY married secondly, 7 Nov 1751, Brooklyn, CT,
widow Zerviah (CHURCH) CLEVELAND. She had been born as Rebecca, 31 Dec 1672,
Watertown, MA, daughter of Samuel and Rebecca (SHATTUCK) CHURCH, and had married
firstly, 1 Jan 1721/2, Canterbury, CT, Edward CLEVELAND, as his second wife.
p. 36, #181: Abigail4 WHITNEY
married 25 Apr 1739, Putnam, CT, John ROBBINS, and had ten children born in Killingly,
CT.
p. 36, #182: Matthias4 WHITNEY
married Alice ROBBINS, according to Eleanor
Robbins Sprague and Andrew West Robbins, "Untangling The Evidence For Two Early
Massachusetts Robbins Families George of Chelmsford (1657) and Robert of Concord
(1671)," New England Historical and Genealogical Register, volume CLI (1997),
pages 395-396.
p. 36, #183: Mary4 WHITNEY
married Nathan McKEE, 19 Nov 1740, Putnam, CT. No record of children for this couple has
been found.
p. 36, #184: Joshua4 WHITNEY
married Joanna -----.
p. 36, #55: There was an additional child not given
by Pierce: Susannah4 WHITNEY, born 12 May 1734, Groton, MA, baptized 12
May 1734, Shirley, MA, according to Shirley vital
records. Nothing further is known of her.
p. 36, #56: David3 WHITNEY's
marriage is recorded in Groton vital records, so
it is unlikely it occurred in Plainfield, CT.
p. 36, #187: Esther4 WHITNEY
married about 1734, John KINGSBURY, and had seven children born in Canaan, CT.
p. 37, #189: Joshua4 WHITNEY
married Amy BLODGETT. It was his first cousin Joshua4 WHITNEY
[William3, Joshua2, John1],
#176 on page 58, who married Anna BLODGETT. This
remarkable conjunction of similar names is a source of much confusion.
p. 37, #190: Elizabeth4 WHITNEY
married Elijah STANTON, 18 Apr 1739, Preston, CT. They had five children born in Preston,
CT, and two more in Sheffield, MA.

27 Jun 1729, according to Plainfield vital
records.

married Sarah ROBERTS.
p. 37, #65: John3 WHITNEY married
secondly, 14 Jan 1730/1, Kittery, ME, Susannah (BARTON) SMITH, widow of Solomon
SMITH, according to Kittery vital records.
Probably it was he and Anne BRATT of Biddeford who published their intentions of marriage
3 Oct 1730, Kittery.
p. 37, #196: Mary4 WHITNEY was
born 12 Mar 1705/6, according to Kittery, ME, vital
records.

married Lydia SPOONER.
p. 37, #199: Hannah4 WHITNEY
married Thomas FERNALD, Jr., 16 Nov 1733, Kittery, ME, according to
Kittery vital records. They had eight children
born in Kittery.
p. 37, #201: Two marriage intentions are shown in
the vital records of Kittery for a Mehitable
Whitney, one dated 20 Sep 1735 to a Stephen AMME, both of Kittery; and one dated 2 Apr 1737
to a Isaac WINCOLL, both of Kittery. No actual marriage is recorded, nor is any record of
children to either such couple found.
p. 37, #202: John4 WHITNEY was
born 14 May 1719, not 4 May 1719, according to
York vital records.
p. 37, #66: The order of children is confused.
p. 37, #204: I have found no record of the death of
Lydia4 WHITNEY.
p. 37, #205: I have found no record of the death of
Lydia4 WHITNEY.

Nathan4 WHITNEY, not Naham, according to
York vital records.
p. 37, #207: His wife was named Hannah DAY,
not Molly DAY.
p. 37, #208: His wife was named Mary CANE, not
Mary CRANE.
p. 37, #209: Sarah4 WHITNEY and
Jeremiah SIMPSON had two children born in York, according to
York vital records. She married secondly John
LARRABEE, according to McLellan's History of Gorham. I have found no other record
of this fact.
p. 37, #210: Isaac4 WHITNEY
married secondly Hannah PAYNE, and thirdly, Mrs. Mary WALKER.
p. 37, #211: Amos4 WHITNEY
married secondly Hannah (BLAKE) JOHNSON.
p. 37, #212: Joanna4 WHITNEY
renewed her baptismal covenant, 7 Sep 1766, Kittery, ME. That is the last record found of
her.
p. 37, #66: There was another child not listed by
Pierce:
p. 37, #67: Jonathan3 WHITNEY
married, 14 Jan 1700/1, Medfield, MA, Susannah FAIRBANKS (not Susannah WHITNEY), born
17 Mar 1682, Medfield, daughter of George and Susannah (-----) FAIRBANKS.
p. 38, #67: Jonathan3 WHITNEY died
16 Jan 1754, Holliston, MA, according to
Holliston vital records.
p. 38, #213: Susannah4 WHITNEY
was born 29 Jan 1702/3, according to Sherborn
vital records. She and Gershom EAMES had seven children born in Holliston, not two.
p. 38, #215: Keziah4 WHITNEY was
born 31 Jul 1706, according to Sherborn vital
records. She and Abraham JONES had two additional children not listed by Pierce.
p. 38, #217: Mary4 WHITNEY's
daughter Susannah JONES, born 10 Nov 1733, I have not found a record to support. Her son
Jonathan JONES was born 11 Apr 1746, according to Mendon vital records.

was born 27 Dec 1718, according to Sherborn vital
records.
p. 38, #222: Jesse4 WHITNEY died
1 Mar 1714, according to Sherborn vital
records.
p. 38, #223: Hannah4 WHITNEY
was not mentioned in the will of her father, but Joseph COZENS signed as an heir in the
settlement of his estate. Probably Hannah was his first wife, and died soon without surviving
issue.
p. 38, #69: Joshua3 WHITNEY had
only one wife, Hannah ROCKETT/ROCKWOOD, whom he married 29 Nov 1709, Medfield,
MA. She died 8 Aug 1772, Ware, MA, according to Ware church records. He died 16 Jun 1771,
Ware, MA, according to Ware church records. It was his son Joshua4 WHITNEY,
below, who married Phebe -----, had inventory taken 1 Dec 1750, and whose widow who married
secondly Caleb PARTRIDGE.
p. 39, #69: The actual list of his children is as
follows:

born 21 Nov 1727, according to Hopkinton vital
records.
p. 39, #237: Jason4 WHITNEY's
second wife was widow Lois (FISHER) PRATT.
p. 39, #238: Mary4 WHITNEY
married Joseph CODY, Jr., 3 Nov 1748, according to
Hopkinton vital records. They had ten
children recorded in Hopkinton. This makes Pierce's proposed parentage untenable on
chronological grounds. Joseph CODY was undoubtedly son of Joseph and Mary (MARTIN)
CODY, born 2 May 1726, Ipswich, MA. The Joseph CODY born in 1736 probably was the one
who married Mary PARMENTER, 17 Dec 1757, Upton, MA. It was the latter Joseph CODY
whose career and children are described by Pierce.
p. 40, #239: Mark4 WHITNEY was
born 11 Apr 1733, according to Hopkinton vital
records. He was baptized 17 Aug 1746, Hopkinton, the last record I have found of him.
p. 40, #241: Thomas4 WHITNEY
was born 24 Feb 1736, according to Hopkinton
vital records.
p. 40, #71: The will of Isaac3
WHITNEY was dated 4 May 1749, not 24 May 1749, according to Middlesex County Probate
Records, File #24658. The order of the children is confused.
p. 40, #245: Gideon4 WHITNEY
was born 29 Nov 1729, according to Hopkinton
vital records.
p. 40, #246: Elizabeth4 WHITNEY
married Ebenezer HOW, 7 Sep 1749, Hopkinton, MA. He remarried 31 Sep 1751 [sic!],
Hopkinton, MA, Lucy STIMPSON.
p. 40, #247: Judith4 WHITNEY was
born 15 Jul 1727, not 25 Jul 1727, according to
Hopkinton vital records. She married 7 Feb
1754, Hopkinton, Nathan SHUMWAY, and had eight children, of which two were recorded at
Oxford, MA, and five at Belchertown, MA.
p. 40, #72: Daniel4 WHITNEY was
born 5 Dec 1681, not 3 Dec 1681, according to
Roxbury vital records, but he was baptized on
the 4th at the Roxbury church.
p. 40, #249: John5 WHITNEY
married 1 May 1727, Boston, MA, Elizabeth BRINNO, and had ten children born in Boston,
MA.

married 31 Jul 1742, Boston, MA, George NOWELL, and had one son born in Boston, MA.
p. 40, #251: Susanna5 WHITNEY
married 12 Oct 1727, Boston, MA, James ADLINGTON.
p. 40, #252: I have found no record of
Daniel5 WHITNEY after his birth, especially no record of any alleged marriage.
p. 40, #253: Anna5 WHITNEY
married, 2 Dec 1736, Boston, MA, John LEE.
p. 40, #254: Elijah5 WHITNEY

one son Timothy5 WHITNEY, born 30 Apr 1721, died 8 Jul 1721, according to
Roxbury vital records.
p. 41, #78: Nathaniel4 WHITNEY was
born 25 Mar 1675, not 5 Mar 1675, according to
Watertown vital records, volume 1, page 39.
Mercy ROBINSON was born 7 Aug 1676, according to
Cambridge vital records, daughter of
William and Elizabeth (CUTTER) ROBINSON.
p. 41, #265: The marriage intentions of
Sarah5 WHITNEY and Ezekiel RICE were published 3 Aug 1726, according to
Weston vital records. They had three additional
children born in Petersham, MA, and one in Dummerston, VT.
p. 41, #267: Elizabeth5 WHITNEY
and Daniel BIGELOW apparently had one additional child, Submit BIGELOW, born 29 Jan
1742, Worcester, MA, who married Jonathan GLEASON.
p. 42, #268: Jonas5 WHITNEY was
born 15 Dec 1703, according to Watertown vital
records, volume 2, page 28. He was baptized 17 Jun 1711, Watertown, MA.
p. 42, #269: James5WHITNEY was
also baptized 17 Jun 1711, Watertown, MA.
p. 42, #270: There was no son Israel5
WHITNEY in this family. Instead, this was Israel4 WHITNEY
[Ebenezer3, Richard2, John1].
p. 42, #271: Susanna4 WHITNEY
was born in 1707 or 1708, since she was in her fourth year at the time of her baptism. She had an
illegitimate daughter Mary5 WHITNEY, father unknown, born 29 Dec 1732,
Weston, MA, baptized 13 Dec 1733, Weston, MA. According to
Bond's Watertown, volume 1, page 262, the
child given as Abigail by Pierce was actually named Abijah, which is confirmed by Weston vital
records.
p. 43, #271: The marriage of Patience GREGORY
to Samuel SMITH occurred on 19 Mar 1772, not 1742.
p. 43, #274: Ebenezer5 WHITNEY
was not the Worcester doctor. That was Ebenezer4 WHITNEY
[Ebenezer3, Richard2, John1], and the text here applies to
that man. This Ebenezer5 WHITNEY married, 6 Feb 1733, Sutton, MA, Lydia
GOODELL, and had two children recorded there.
p. 43, #80: William4 WHITNEY died
24 Jun 1720, not 24 Jan 1720, according to Weston
vital records.
p. 43, #27: The second wife of
William5 WHITNEY was widow Mary (CHADWICK) PIERCE. His third wife was
widow Margaret (GATES) SPRING.
p. 43, #278: Judith5 WHITNEY was
living 21 Jan 1727/8, when she owned the covenant, according to
Weston vital records.
p. 43, #280: Amity5 WHITNEY
married, 14 Oct 1730, Sudbury, MA, Lebbeus GRAVES, and had seven children recorded, the
first at Sudbury, and the rest at Killingly, CT, and an eighth not recorded.
p. 43, #281: Timothy and Martha 5
(WHITNEY) MOSSMAN had eight children recorded in Sudbury, MA. In the birth records, she
is called both Martha and Mercy, for some unknown reason.
p. 44, #282: Sarah5 WHITNEY was
born 19 Aug 1723, not 29 Aug 1723, according to
Stratford, CT, vital records, volume LR2, page
487a. She and Daniel FOOTE had eight children born in Stratford and Newtown, CT.
p. 44, #280: Edward and Mary5
(WHITNEY) OSBORNE had two children born in Stratford, CT, and one in Fairfield, CT.
p. 44, #284: Samuel5 WHITNEY
married secondly Martha HOWES.
p. 44, #89: John4 WHITNEY married
secondly, 28 Nov 1754, Weston, MA, Beriah (BEMIS) (CHILD) PIERCE, daughter of John and
Mary (HARRINGTON) BEMIS, and widow of Daniel CHILD and Joseph PIERCE. Beriah did
not marry his cousin John4 WHITNEY [Benjamin3,
John2, John1], #98 on page 44.
This John WHITNEY died 11 Nov 1760, Weston, MA, according to
Weston vital records
p. 44, #288: John5 WHITNEY
married, 6 Oct 1737, Weston, MA, Bethia CUTTER. She did not marry John4
WHITNEY [Benjamin3, John2, John1],
#98 on page 44. They had two sons John6 and
Ephraim6, neither treated by Pierce.
p. 44, #290: Joseph5 and Mary
(CHILD) WHITNEY had nine children recorded in Weston and Worcester. One of them was
Abijah6 WHITNEY, whom Pierce misplaces as
#826 on page 150. Another is Mary6
WHITNEY, whom Pierce misplaces as #785 on page
71.
p. 44, #92: Benjamin4 WHITNEY was
born 31 Jan 1684/5, not 30 June 1684, according to
Watertown vital records, volume 1, page 56.
Probably he was the father by Sarah PHILLIPS of an illegitimate daughter Susanna5
WHITNEY, born 28 Sep 1705, died 28 Nov 1705, Watertown, MA, according to
Watertown vital records, volume 2, page
31.
p. 44, #291: Joseph5 WHITNEY
married secondly, Elizabeth GODDARD. She did not marry his son Joseph6
WHITNEY, #823 on page 150.
p. 44, #292: Benjamin5 WHITNEY
married Rebecca -----, and had eight children, which Pierce has erroneously assigned to his uncle
Benjamin4 WHITNEY, a discussion of this
matter available.
p. 44, #293: Samuel5 WHITNEY
married secondly, Lydia PRENTICE. This marriage is tentatively assigned by Pierce to
#298 on page 44.
p. 44, #96: Benjamin4 WHITNEY did
not marry Rebecca -----, but instead died 13 Nov 1713, Watertown, MA, unmarried. It was a
cousin Benjamin5 WHITNEY [Benjamin4, Joseph3,
John2, John1], #292 on page
73 who married Rebecca -----. There is
a discussion of this matter
available.
p. 44, #295: Mary5 WHITNEY
married 15 Feb 1759, Worcester, MA, Jonathan SAWIN, according to
Worcester vital records. They had nine
children, some born in Worcester, some in Westminster, and some not recorded.
p. 44, #296: Benjamin5 WHITNEY
did not go to Norwalk, Conn. Instead he married 29 Jan 1765, Newton, MA, Sarah WHITE,
according to Newton vital records. They had a son
Amos6 WHITNEY, born in Worcester, MA.
p. 44, #298: It was not this Samuel WHITNEY
who married Lydia PRENTICE, but instead she was the second wife of Samuel5
WHITNEY, #293 on page 44. Instead, this man married
firstly, 24 Nov 1762, Newton, MA, Mary WHITE, according to
Newton vital records. They had six children
born in Worcester, MA. Then he married secondly, (intentions 27 Oct 1805, Westminster, MA;
intentions 1 Oct 1805, Templeton, MA) Mrs. Hannah WETHERBEE of Westminster.
p. 44, #300: Henry5 WHITNEY was
not a child of this family. Instead, this baptism belongs to Henry6 WHITNEY,
#874 on page 76, who is the same as
#328 on page 78.
p. 44, #301: Lydia5 WHITNEY
married 16 Apr 1766, Worcester, MA, Josiah BOYDEN, according to
Worcester vital records.
p. 44, #98: John4 WHITNEY married
only one wife, Susan -----. Bethia CUTTER married instead John5 WHITNEY
[John4, Joseph3, John2, John1],
#288 on page 44, and Beriah (BEMIS) (CHILD) PIERCE
married instead John4 WHITNEY [Joseph3, John2,
John1], #89 on page 44. The estate of
John4 WHITNEY was probated on 18 May 1776, according to Middlesex County
probate records, File #24685, and the following heirs were cited: Abraham, Ezekiel, and Stephen
WHITNEY. Since there is no mention of the other children or their heirs, it may be inferred that
all the others had died without surviving issue.
p. 44, #303: I can find no evidence that there was
any John DEAN who married any Susanna in the middle of the 18th century. Since neither she
nor her heirs were mentioned in the citation of heirs in her father's probate, 18 May 1776, I infer
that she had died without surviving issue before that date. It seems unlikely that this
Susanna5 WHITNEY was the one who married, 27 Jul 1749, Watertown, MA, John
WARREN, according to Watertown vital
records, volume 3, page 125. They had four children baptized in Watertown, according to
Bond's Watertown, volume 1, page
625.
p. 44, #304: There is confusion between this
John5 WHITNEY and #453 on page 53. Since
neither he nor his heirs were mentioned in the citation of heirs in his father's probate, 18 May
1776, I infer that he had died without surviving issue before that date. It seems unlikely that
this John5 WHITNEY was the one "of Waltham" who married, 4 Jul
1753, Watertown, MA, Mary BENJAMIN. More likely that was #453.
p. 44, #306: There was an Amos WHITING, not
WHITNEY, who lived in Barre, MA.
p. 45, #307: Abraham5 WHITNEY
was baptized, not born, on 7 Dec 1735, Watertown, MA, according to
Bond's Watertown, volume 1, page
647.
p. 45, #310: Stephen5 WHITNEY
was born 14 Aug 1743, not 23 Apr 1743, according to
Watertown vital records, volume 3, page
160.
p. 45, #99: Rebecca FILLEBROWN was born 7
Nov 1695, not 6 Nov 1695, according to Cambridge vital records.
p. 45, #315: Anna5 WHITNEY was
born 9 Aug 1725, not 8 Aug 1725, according to
Waltham vital records.
p. 45, #317: Ruth5 WHITNEY was
born 3 Feb 1728, not 23 Feb 1728, according to
Waltham vital records.
p. 45, #321 1/2: Abigail5 WHITNEY
and Edmund FOWLE were married 9 May 1745, not 17 Mar 1745, according to
Watertown vital records, volume 3, page
123. Daughter Abigail FOWLE married Joshua BOWMAN, not BROWN, and the date was
9 Apr 1767, not 29 Apr 1767, according to Cambridge vital records. Son Jeremiah FOWLE
married Polly CAPEN, not CAPER.
p. 45, #322: I have seen no evidence of an alleged
second wife Mary SEAVER. There was an additional wife Sarah -----.
p. 45, #323: John and Joanna5
(WHITNEY) COOKE's son John COOKE married Susanna FULLER of Newton. Their son
Israel COOKE married Sarah ROBBINS.
p. 46, #325: Nathaniel COOLIDGE died 24 Dec
1773, Watertown, MA.
p. 46, #328: Henry5 WHITNEY was
born 31 Dec 1738, not 3 Dec 1738, according to
Watertown vital records, volume 3, page
116. He did not marry Hannah TOMBS. Instead he had died before 1 Jun 1770 without
surviving issue, since neither he nor his heirs is mentioned in his father's will. It was
Henry6 WHITNEY, #874 on page 76 who
married Hannah TOMBS and had the family described on page
78.
p. 46, #330: Lydia5 WHITNEY was
baptized 10 Apr 1743, according to Watertown
vital records, volume 4, page 147. She died without surviving issue before 1 Jun 1770, since
neither she nor her heirs is mentioned in her father's will.
p. 46, #333: Pierce does not give the second
marriage of Lucy6 (WHITNEY) DANA. She married secondly 2 Nov 1800,
Watertown, MA, Samuel WHITTEMORE, as his second wife, according to the Whittemore
genealogy, page 246.
p. 46, #102: If his age at death is accurate,
Moses4 WHITNEY was born 15 Jun 1689, not in 1690. He had three wives: Lydia
TAYLOR, Elizabeth -----, and widow Sarah (SHED) HUTCHINS. Sarah GEARY married his
grandson Moses6 WHITNEY [Ephraim5, Moses4,
Moses3, Richard2, John1],
#943 on page 80.
p. 46, #336: Jonathan and Sarah5
(WHITNEY) WOOD had seven children born in Lunenburg, MA, according to Lunenburg vital
records. Of these, only the three listed by Pierce were living 12 Jul 1774 at the time of their
grandfather's will, in which they were mentioned.
p. 46, #339: Bezaleel5 WHITNEY
died 6 May 1730, according to Littleton vital
records.
p. 46, #340: Lydia5 WHITNEY was
born 26 Apr 1719, Littleton, MA, and married Samuel TAYLOR of Templeton, 9 Apr 1741,
Littleton, MA, according to Littleton vital
records.
p. 46, #341: Mary5 WHITNEY was
born 30 Jul 1729, according to Littleton vital
records. She and John WHITE had six children born in Lunenburg, MA.
p. 46, #103: Abraham4 WHITNEY
married secondly on 16 Jul 1767, Stow, MA, widow Elizabeth (FARLEY) SHED of Harvard,
widow of John SHED.
p. 47, #347: The children of Silas and
Mary5 (WHITNEY) JEWELL are listed after the record of the death of
Abraham4 WHITNEY. There were two additional children, Ephraim and Jacob
JEWELL, born in Harvard, MA.
p. 47, #104: Dorcas (WOOD) WHITNEY died 21
Feb 1725, not 22 Feb 1725, according to Stow vital
records. This was the same date her daughter Dorcas5 WHITNEY died.
p. 47, #348: I have not seen any evidence of the
existence of this son Jonathan5 WHITNEY.
p. 47, #349: Dorcas5 WHITNEY
died 21 Feb 1725, not 22 Feb 1725, according to Stow
vital records. This was the same date her mother Dorcas (WOOD) WHITNEY died.
p. 47, #353: Moses5 WHITNEY
married secondly Martha (PECK) CUNNINGHAM.
p. 47, #355: Aaron5 WHITNEY was
born 2 June 1740, not 2 July 1740, according to
Harvard vital records.
p. 47, #357: Priscilla5 WHITNEY
was born 12 Mar 1728, not 13 Mar 1728, according to
Stow vital records. She married, 28 Nov 1754,
Sudbury, MA, James CARTER, according to
Sudbury vital records.
p. 47, #358: Micah5 WHITNEY
married firstly, 16 Apr 1755, Leicester, MA, Mellicent MAYNARD, according to
Sudbury vital records. He married secondly,
22 Feb 1759, Leicester, Hannah HARWOOD, according to
Leicester vital records. He had one son
Eliphalet6 WHITNEY, born 4 Jul 1762, Templeton, MA, according to
Templeton vital records.
p. 47, #359: Beulah5 WHITNEY and
Samuel BYAM published their intentions of marriage on 20 Aug 1758 in both Leicester and
Templeton, MA, according to Leicester vital
records and Petersham vital records.
They had eight children born in Templeton, MA.
p. 47, #360: Lois5 WHITNEY
married, 24 Aug 1754, Worcester, MA, William TAYLOR, according to
Worcester vital records. They had five
children recorded in Worcester.
p. 47, #361: Damaris5 WHITNEY
married, 20 Mar 1773, Stow, MA, Joseph GARFIELD of Weston, according to
Stow vital records. They had two children born in
Weston.
p. 47, #362: Eunice5 WHITNEY
married, 16 Apr 1766, Templeton, MA, David THURSTON. They had eight children, four born
in Templeton, MA, and four in Marlborough, NH.
p. 47, #106: Lemuel4 WHITNEY
was born 1 Aug 1706, not 1 Aug 1714, if his age at death is accurate. There was an additional
child Sibel5 WHITNEY, born after 17 Apr 1740, who died 26 Sep 1753, Stow, MA,
according to Stow vital records. The order of the
children is probably not correct. #370 was probably the eldest, then #364, #365, #371, the
additional Sibel5, #366, #367, #368, and #369.
p. 47, #367: Anna5 WHITNEY was
born 7 June 1745, not 4 June 1745, according to Stow
vital records.
p. 47, #370: Elias5 WHITNEY
married, 20 Nov 1758, Stow, MA, Rachel WHEELER of Acton, according to
Stow vital records.
p. 47, #371: Lemuel5 WHITNEY
and Elizabeth WHEELER of Acton published their intentions of marriage on 15 Mar 1761,
according to Stow vital records.
p. 47, #107: This John WHITNEY was more likely
John4 WHITNEY [Isaiah3, Thomas2,
John1], #139 on page 32, and Rebecca
WHITNEY his wife was very likely a daughter of Moses3 WHITNEY
[Richard2, John1]. Absolute proof of these identifications has not yet
been found, however. Given that, he was born 6 Dec 1698, Lexington, MA, according to
Lexington vital records. Rebecca
(WHITNEY) WHITNEY seems to be the widow Rebeckah WHITNEY who died in Harvard,
MA, 27 Jul 1780, "of advanced age."
p. 48, #372: John5 WHITNEY
married secondly Elizabeth SAWTELL.
p. 48, #373: Sarah5 WHITNEY
married 26 Nov 1747, Groton, MA, Benjamin WILSON, according to
Groton vital records.
p. 48, #374: Ezra5 WHITNEY
married firstly Agnes -----, and secondly Elizabeth -----.
p. 48, #375: Beulah5 WHITNEY
died 7 Feb 1763, Shirley, MA, unmarried, according to
Shirley vital records.
p. 48, #109: If his age at death is accurate,
Richard4 WHITNEY was born 9 Dec 1692. Hannah WHITCOMB was born 28
Mar 1694, Lancaster, MA. His second wife was widow Hannah (EVELETH) AYERS, daughter
of John and Mary (BOWMAN) EVELETH and widow of Edward AYERS of Boston.
p. 48, #377: Mary5 WHITNEY
married about 1736, John GATES. They had eight children born in Stow, MA.
p. 48, #378: Dorothy5 WHITNEY
married about 1741, Phineas TAYLOR. They had eight children born in Stow, MA.
p. 48, #380: Hannah5 WHITNEY
and Edward WETHERBEE published their intentions of marriage 26 Mar 1743, Stow, MA,
according to Stow vital records. They had four
children recorded in Stow.
p. 48, #382: Elizabeth5 WHITNEY
and Joseph WETHERBEE published their intentions of marriage 16 Apr 1748, not 15 Apr 1748,
according to Stow vital records. She died before
8 Apr 1755, when he married his second wife Hannah FORBUSH.
p. 48, #384: There are two marriages of a Sarah
WHITNEY with a ----- WHITCOMB: Sarah WHITNEY and Oliver WHITCOMB published
their intentions of marriage 17 Dec 1754, Stow, MA; and Sarah WHITNEY married Abel
WHITCOMB, 23 Dec 1769, Harvard, MA. The latter is the date given by Pierce for the
marriage of Sarah5 WHITNEY and Capt. Hezekiah WHITCOMB of Harvard, for
which no vital record evidence is found. I don't yet have enough information to unravel this.
p. 49, #110: The order of the children is not as
given by Pierce. My suggested order is Simon, Betsey, Jonathan, Phinehas, Caleb, Oliver, Alice,
Hezekiah, Ruhamah, and Sarah.
p. 49, #387: I have seen no evidence for the
existence of the first wife Lydia -----.
p. 49, #388: Simon5 WHITNEY
married firstly Olive WETHERBE of Stow, and thirdly Mary -----.
p. 49, #389: Jonathan5 WHITNEY
was born about 1724, if his age at death is accurate.
p. 49, #390: Betsey5 WHITNEY
probably was born about 1722, given her marriage date and the dates of birth of her siblings. She
and Phineas WETHERBEE had five children recorded in Stow and Harvard, MA.
p. 49, #111: Joshua4 WHITNEY was
born between 16 Mar 1705/6 and 15 Mar 1706/7, if his age at death is correct; and between 1
Mar 1707/8 and 28 Feb 1708/9, if the age on his guardianship bond is correct. Of course these
are contradictory. He married four wives:
p. 49, #395: Sarah5 WHITNEY and
Simon MAYNOR of Sudbury published their intentions of marriage 18 Jan 1754, Stow, MA,
according to Stow vital records. They had three
children.
p. 49, #396: Mary5 WHITNEY and
Silas FARR published their intentions of marriage 21 Jun 1762, Stow, MA, according to
Stow vital records. They had a daughter born in
Stow.
p. 49, #397: Caleb5 WHITNEY and
Katherine MAXWELL published their intentions of marriage 1 Dec 1770, Stow, Middlesex, MA.
He married (secondly?), 18 Dec 1777, Bradford, MA, Sarah TRASK. They had nine children
born in Bradford and Haverhill, MA. They resided in Pembroke and Concord, NH, where Caleb
died in Oct 1822, aged 73 years.
p. 49, #398: Joshua5 WHITNEY
married Marcy PIERCE.
p. 50, #400: Zachariah5 WHITNEY
was born 2 Oct 1732, Pomfret, CT, according to
Pomfret vital records, volume 1, page
51.
p. 50, #401: Moses5 WHITNEY was
born 7 Jul 1735, not 27 Jun 1735, Pomfret, CT, according to
Pomfret vital records, volume 1, page
51.
p. 50, #403: Ephraim3 WHITNEY
married Rhoda -----, and had seven children born in
Montague, MA, not treated by Pierce.
p. 50, #404: There was a Joseph WHITNEY who
married Mary LYON, but I think that that was Joseph5 WHITNEY, son of
Joseph4 and Rebecca (BEAL) WHITNEY [Josiah3,
(prob.)Benjamin2, John1]. The subsequent history of
Joseph5 WHITNEY whose birth is given here is unknown to me.
p. 50, #118: Ezekiel4 WHITNEY
married secondly Sarah PARKE, not Sarah FARRAH, born 23 Feb 1706/7, Stonington, CT,
daughter of William and Jane (BORDEN) PARKE.
p. 50, #410: Isabel5 WHITNEY was
born 15 Apr 1731, not 13 Apr 1731, according to
Pomfret, CT, vital records.
p. 50, #411: Zerviah5 WHITNEY
was born 11 Mar 1731/2, not 15 Mar 1732, Pomfret, CT, according to
Pomfret, CT, vital records. She married, 1
Nov 1749, Kent, CT, Reuben McWETHY.
p. 50, #120: Thomas4 WHITNEY
was born 17 Sep 1681, not 17 Jul 1681, as Pierce has it, nor 17 Sep 1687, as found in
Stow vital records. The gap between the marriage
in 1704 and the first recorded child in 1714 leads one to believe that there may have been four or
five unrecorded children born in this gap in this family, as well as some after 1714. Some
possibilities are:
p. 50, #418: Joseph5 WHITNEY
married Hannah CHANDLER, not Hannah (SANBORN) CHANDLER.
p. 50, #122: John4 WHITNEY made
a will dated 3 Sep 1747, and proved 3 Nov 1747, so he died between those dates, not in
1757.
p. 50, #419: Elizabeth5 WHITNEY
married firstly (int. 15 Nov 1728, Stow, MA) Isaiah4 WHITNEY,
#140 on page 53. This is proved by her mother's will, which
mentions granddaughter Betty BRUCE. This was Betty5 (WHITNEY) BRUCE,
wife of Samuel BRUCE, daughter of Isaiah4 and Elizabeth5
(WHITNEY) WHITNEY, born 3 Jan 1733/4, Harvard, MA. Thus this Elizabeth5
WHITNEY must be the one who married Isaiah4 WHITNEY. After his death on 9
Aug 1737, she married secondly Jonathan SAWYER, Jr., of Harvard.
p. 51, #421: Her daughter Sarah WHEELER
married Samuel MORSE, not Samuel MORRIS.
p. 51, #422: Barrett5 WHITNEY
married, 16 Jun 1737, Boston, MA, Elizabeth ADAMS, not ALLEN, according to
Boston vital records. In 1761, neither he nor his
heirs are mentioned in the will of his brother Job, so he probably died without issue before
that.
p. 51, #423: David5 WHITNEY was
born 21 Jan 1716/7, not 21 Jun 1717, according to
Marlborough vital records.
p. 51, #424: Her daughter Persis GOODALE was
born 7 Nov 1746, not 7 Nov 1745, according to Marlborough vital records.
p. 51, #426: Abraham and Sarah5
(WHITNEY) JOSLIN had at least one more child, Nathaniel JOSLIN, baptized 4 May 1766,
New Braintree, MA.
p. 51, #431: Benjamin5 WHITNEY
was born 8 May 1732, not 9 May 1732, according to
Marlborough vital records.
p. 51, #432: George5 WHITNEY
was born 25 Mar 1733, not 22 Mar 1733, according to
Marlborough vital records.
p. 52, #125: The given birth date of
Nathan4 WHITNEY cannot be found in any vital record. The day and month are
those of his marriage to Mary HOLMAN, which is suspicious. His will was dated 18 Jun 1755,
and proved 15 Jun 1761.
p. 52, #435: Nathan5 WHITNEY
married Tabitha BENNETT, not BARNETT.
p. 52, #436: Mary5 WHITNEY of
Stow and Jeremiah PRIEST of Harvard published their intentions of marriage 17 Dec 1743 in
both Stow and Harvard, MA. They had eleven children born in Harvard, MA.
p. 52, #437: Jeremiah5 WHITNEY
married firstly Elizabeth FARR, and second Azubah BENNETT.
p. 52, #438: Her son David WARNER was born
23 Nov 1766, not 3 Nov 1766, according to Harvard vital records.
I believe that there were at least two further children:
Elinor and Josiah would be by the first wife Jane, and Huldah by the second wife Mary. The
reason for placing those children here is essentially a process of elimination. A
discussion of Josiah's parentage is available
on-line, and most of the same reasoning applies to Huldah.
For details of this family and descendants, see Ward, Robert Leigh, "The Footloose Joshua
Whitney (1687-1771), and Some of His Descendants," The American Genealogist,
vol. 74 (1999), pages 197-208. I have seen no evidence supporting the existence of children
#226 and #227.
